LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 10.25 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE SLIGHTLY STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 50 DEGREES.

Bass fishing is good. The water level has remained steady over the past week and is now starting to rise again slightly after the recent rains. The water temperature has dropped to the 50 degree mark, but should be back on the rise with more warm weather on the way. Our focus over the last week has continued to be the creek channel ditches which are present throughout the lake and range from shallow to deep depending on the location. We have been working the ditches from 5 feet deep all the way out to 40 feet deep. When we are out deeper, we are focusing on the ditches with isolated timber and using either a spoon jigged vertically or a jig worked VERY slowly through the timber. We have caught the shallow fish on shaky head worms, jigs, crank baits, jerk baits, and the Fish Head Spin. The shallow fish seem to be the best and most available during periods of sunny weather, while the cloudy weather pushes the bait and fish deeper. If there is wind blowing, fish your moving baits where the wind is the strongest and most direct into the bank and use a very slow retrieve with any of the above baits. When using the jerk bait, make sure to impart long pauses between your twitches. Don’t expect to get many bites, but the ones you get will be quality. Look for secondary points in the mouths of creeks that offer clay and rock that are close to deep water. When searching for the deeper fish in the creek channels and ditches, use your Lowrance electronics to identify subtle structure changes to include creek ditch depressions. Where there is bait, there is or will soon be fish. As always, once you find a creek, pocket, or main lake area holding bait and fish, you may have success by rotating that area with other areas you find holding bait and fish. Fish move up and down in the water column throughout the day, and in the same context move from deep to shallow. Given that, if you have success at one point in the day in a particular location, you may return again later and enjoy further success in the same area and perhaps at different depth.

This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of Big Fish On! Guide Service, 404 561 2564. www.bigfishonguide.com

Striper fishing is very good. Find the large continuous strings of bait half way back in the creek channel and fish there. This has been the key for the last several weeks and will continue as long as the water temperatures stay in the mid to high 40’s. Once the temperature drops to 45 degrees the fish will be locked in on small baits. If you can throw the net get some Threadfin Shad and use those. If not, downsize your baits to medium shiners, trout fingerlings and small herring. The down rod bite just over the bait has been the ticket this week. Keep your eyes open for birds and follow their lead. If they are diving at bait and you can get to the fish before they disperse, throw a Mack Farr 1/2 ounce buck tail with a small fluke trailer. You can also use a spinning rod to toss a small herring or threadfin on a weighted float into the center of the activity. Keep your bait about three feet below the float. If the birds are actively searching an area, set out a spread with baits 40 feet behind your boards, free lines 80 to 100 feet back and a couple down rods. Try both weighted and non weighted free lines. Use the umbrella rigs to quickly search an area. When the sun gets up your best bet is to switch to down rods over bait half way back in the creeks. Remember to keep your hook size matched to the size of your bait. Balus and Flat creek are good places to start on the south end. On the north end try Johnson Creek, Lathem Creek, Wahoo Creek and Little River. We teach “ON THE WATER SCHOOLS” for SONAR and Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass. Call for details. Call for details.

WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 5.84 FEET, DIRTY & 52 DEGREES BY CHRIS BELL

Bass fishing has been good. Patterns have remained consistent this week with continuous cool evenings and periodic rain. Offshore hotspots on spotted bass have continued to produce with drop shot rigs and jigging spoons. If largemouth are your focus you are going to need to cover a lot of water with shallow crank baits and spinnerbaits. Look for red clay points and rocky banks with sunlight on them most of the day. Most of these points and banks will be north eastern shorelines. Make long casts with crank baits and spinnerbaits on the shallow end of points. Slowly reel baits making sure to keep continuous contact with the bottom. The best crank baits are a Bomber 4A and Bandit 200 series in a red craw pattern. Spinnerbait patterns can be limited to a ½ ounce War Eagle white with double willow leaf blades gold and silver.

Hybrid and striper fishing is great. Fish have positioned on top of humps and road beds. Using live shad dropped down to schools of fish is working the best. Use your depth finders to locate fish. You may have to check multiple areas before locating fish with the recent changes in water levels.

Crappie fishing has been great. Crappie are beginning to show up mid way in pockets on cover and points. For your trolling bite troll Jiffy jigs in a black chartreuse pattern to depths of ten to twelve feet. Whenever cover is present in the way of brush piles and lay downs will hold multiple crappie this time of year. Use live minnows down lined to depths ten to twelve feet in and around cover

LAKE ALLATOONA IS DOWN 11.93 FEET, STAINED AND 52

This bass fishing report is from Matt Driver 404-456-6094 www.proanglerradio.com

Bass fishing has been fair and the fish are still all over the water column. Run and gun with baits like the Spro 95 McStick and fish it quickly like you would in the early fall. Fish are really scattered. Spinner baits, and lipless crank baits are also good choices. The jig head bite is pretty good right now but could be better if we get a drop of a few degrees. With the weather being up and down be prepared to adjust day by day. It’s still hard to beat a Shakey head with a Zoom green finesse worm lake wide in and around docks and any brush. For the larger bass, get the jigs out and add a small Zoom pork imitation and make all the colors all black or black and blue combinations.

This Lake Allatoona Fishing Guides Fishing Report Is Bought to You by Robert Eidson of First Bite Guide Service 770 827-6282 www,firstbiteguideservice.com.

Line side fishing is good and the hybrids and stripers are concentrated mid lake from the “S” turns to Bartow Carver and on the river channel between Kellogg Creek and Victoria. Early in the morning, flat lines and planer boards are getting hammered. Trout and shad seem to be working equally well. The down line bite should also produce, and the fish are anywhere from 18 to 35 feet. The best bite is on umbrella rigs once the sun gets up, though. My clients have been catching very good numbers on an umbrella rig pulled 80 to 100 feet behind the boat with chartreuse jigs and trailers. He said to pull the edges of the river and creek channels and to expect bites when you start marking the huge clouds of baitfish. Also, be sure to keep something tied on for the schooling fish. When you see gulls diving, you’ll find hybrids and stripers pushing bait up. Fish this schooling action fish with a white Rooster Tail, fluke or Spook. CLARKS HILL IS DOWN 9.06 FEET, 52 DEGREES & STAINED

Bass fishing is fair and the weather continues to try and fool the anglers and the fish. Warm then cold weather can force bass tight into cover after a cold front. Use the Rattle Back black and blue or all black 1/2 ounce jig and a larger Pro Pork Trailer by Uncle Josh, on the heavy cover. The bass can be tight in cover and the Zoom lizards in pumpkinseed colors is fair. In the creeks on points close to the current, use the dark jig and pig combination, fishing tight in any cover on the bank as far out as 15 feet. Use some Real Craw scent and use it often casting to the same location. See our web site for Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale.

January 20, 2012

LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 2.99 FEET, CLEAR & 53 DEGREES

Bass fishing is fair and the weather is still cold and then warm. For a bigger fish, use a 1/2 ounce Enticer Back black and blue and a larger Pro Pork Trailer by Uncle Josh on the heavy cover. Find thick brush piles on points as they will hold bass. The Ito Vision 110 in the shad pattern and a small Fat Free shad are fair as the water warms later in the day. Start out using worms and jigs worked slowly. The Zoom smoke red u tail worm in the brush using a Texas rig with light sinker will draw a few strikes. Crank baits are better in the creek and bright perch or bream colors are fair. See our web site for Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale.

LAKE SEMINOLE IS DOWN ONE FOOT, CLEAR, 55 DEGREES BY MATT BATY

Bass fishing is fair and the fish are on the points and creeks bends. Look down lake on creek bends and up in creeks. Find the clearest water possible in the creeks. Use the Culprit green shad worms on the points as tight as possible. In the Spring Creek area use a floating Rapala with a gold side and black back and work it slowly around grass beds. Frogs are still working just be sure to use a braid. Try the Culprit worm in dark colors over the grass and wood cover. Fishing is better later each day as the water warms. Finesse worms floated over grass beds or a u tail worm in dark colors, can work after the sun is up. Use a light 1/16 lead weight on the edges of the grass. Learn how to use the Lowrance Structure Scan and Down Scan technology with Southern Fishing “On the Water” fishing schools.

LAKE WEISS IS DOWN 5.20 FEET, 45 DEGREES & STAINED

Now available for sale 50 of my proven GPS waypoints for off shore structure for Bass and Crappie fishing on Weiss Lake, Alabama. E mail ken@havefunfishing.com

Bass fishing is fair and the fish have moved to a deeper winter pattern, some Bass are being caught on rip rap rocks on jigs. A Carolina rig is working well for the deeper fish on main lake points and ledges. Very few largemouth are being caught, most all are spots. Little River and the Chattooga River are producing some great spot fishing with a lot of 2 to 4 pound fish, a drop shot rig with a 4 inch craw or a mini fluke, is working awesome on most any deeper, rocky river channel ledge in Little River. The smaller spots are up shallow on the rocks and the larger spots are on the deeper parts of the ledge 10 to 16 feet deep, look for the bigger fish right in the middle of the channel.

Crappie fishing is good and the fish are starting to move in to the deeper water of the creeks and bays on a pre spawn pattern. Little spring Creek is producing some great Crappie fishing, long line trolling with 1/24 ounce Jiffy Jigs in colors JJ 08, JJ 13, JJ 17, JJ 25, JJ 37 in 6 to 12 feet of water, a float and fly is also working well in the stumps and flats in Little Spring Creek. The bays near Riverside are producing some Crappie long line trolling also. The crappie bite is good and we are catching a lot of mixed sized fish from 8 to 13 inches. Look for the bite to really get good with any warming trend that comes in over the next few weeks.

January 20, 2012

LAKE SINCLAIR IS DOWN 1.30 FEET, 54 DEGREES, MOSTLY STAINED.

Bass fishing is slow and the smaller fish are all that you can count on. Fish the main and up lake points with the cooler weather. Depths can be from 4 to 15 feet and the cold front and high skies put them tight on cover. Worms and a Texas rig using a Zoom u tail in smoke and red tight on bank structure can draw strikes. The Stanley 3/8 ounce jig in the black and blue and black and browns is a good choice. Be sure to add the Uncle Josh #11 matching dark pork trailer. Later each day up in creeks, the bass will bite crank baits in fire tiger and crawfish. A slight stain in the water is an advantage during a warm up later each day. Bomber 7A’s cast right on the bank, can produce strikes just work lures slowly on 10 pound test line for better action and depth. Also creek points and deep docks are good locations, and run the lures under and around these docks. Main lake points in the deeper waters around any of the stands of trees using a 1/2 ounce Hopkins spoon, is starting to work. Locate man made brush piles and work spoons over the brush as well as the brush on the old docks. We teach “ON THE WATER SCHOOLS” for SONAR and Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass. Call for details. LAKE OCONEE IS FULL, 48 DEGREES

Bass fishing is fair and the main lake is clear, stained up the rivers. Winter is here so it is time to think jigs. Black blue jigs under docks and around wood structure. Work these jigs slowly the fish are in the winter mood and they like things slow. The bite will be very soft so stay in contact with your line. Any change the feel of the bait and it is time to set the hook. It is also time for spoon jigging off of the main lake points and around the humps on the south end of the lake. Use your Lowrance to locate the schools of fish staging on the side of the points and humps and drop your Capt. Mack’s spoon down to the fish. If the water is clear use a shad pattern for your spoon if it is stained then switch to a chartreuse shad pattern.

Lake Oconee Line Side report brought to you by Mark Smith at Reel Time Guide Service. 404-803-0741. wwwreeltimeguideservice.com

Line side fishing is good. The stripers and hybrids continue to bite down near the dam. These fish are after smaller baits. We have cut down the size of the umbrella rigs. You can take the trailers and cut about an inch off of them and this will down size your rigs. Live bait is also producing. Use your Lowrance to locate the schools of bait and drop your bait in the schools. The Stripers may not show on the Lowrance but they are close to the bait. Keep a Capt. Mac spoon tied on. There are times that it will out produce the live bait.

Crappie fishing is good. The fish are in the middle of most creeks and big coves. Spider rigging is working as well as finding the fish on your Lowrance and dropping live bait to them. Tip you jig with a minnow to increase your bite. Lick Creek has been out producing most of the other creeks. I will be starting my crappie trips this month. Give me a call and we will try and fill your cooler with big slabs. Remember to stop by Sugar Creek Marina for all your bass, crappie and striper needs. They have Capt. Mack’s umbrella rigs in stock along with the Capt. Mack spoons, and all the crappie jigs you can use. Call about our “ON THE WATER SCHOOLS” for SONAR and Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass. JACKSON LAKE IS DOWN 4.50 FEET, LIGHT STAIN & 51 DEGREES

Bass fishing is fair. Go up the rivers and flip and pitch black or blue Stanley jigs with a matching plastic Zoom pork style trailer to the docks and heavy bank cover. Use the darker red colors in all worms and lizards and shad crank baits are good casting them right on the banks. Early and late each day, use a bubble gum Zoom trick worm on the wood and even rip rap on bridges. The bass bite better later in the day, on the grass lines or the rip rap on bridges. On main lake points a 3/8th ounce Stanley sinner bait is good and cast to any stumps. During the middle of the day, the river bass are fair on a larger Gilraker worm and fish them right on the bank cover. The Zoom water melon seed lizard and a long 3 foot Carolina rig can draw a few strikes on points down lake. We teach “ON THE WATER SCHOOLS” for SONAR and Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass. LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 10.71 FEET AND THE BACKS OF CREEKS ARE STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 50 DEGREES.

This Lake Lanier Bass report is from Jim Mathley, www.jimboonlanier.com 770 542 7764

Bass fishing has remained good as we have continued to catch big fish both deep and shallow through the week. The Lake Lanier water level has risen nearly a foot over the past 10 days and the surface temperatures are rising as well with the recent warm rain and temperatures. Our focus over the last week has been the creek channel ditches which are present throughout the lake and range from shallow to deep depending on the location. If there is wind blowing, fish your moving baits where the wind is the strongest and most direct into the bank and use a slow to moderate retrieve. Don’t expect to get many bites, but the ones you get will be quality. There are some secondary points in creeks that are producing fish during the active fish periods and when the wind is blowing as noted above. Look for the points that offer clay and rock that are close to deep water. The upper lake and rivers are really holding fish in certain creek ditches in 10 to 30 feet of water. When searching for the deeper fish in the creek channels/ditches, use your Lowrance electronics to identify subtle structure changes to include creek-ditch depressions. Given that, if you have success at one point in the day in a particular location, you may return again later and enjoy further success in the same area.

This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of Big Fish On! Guide Service, 404 561 2564. www.bigfishonguide.com

Striper fishing is very good both in terms of size and numbers. Not much has changed in terms of technique. Find the large continuous strings of bait half way back in the creek channel and fish there. This has been the key for the last several weeks and will continue as long as the water temperatures stay in the mid to high 40’s. The down rod bite just over the bait has been the ticket this week. However, there is a brief shallow water bite before the sun gets up. Keep your eyes open for birds and follow their lead. If they are diving at bait and you can get to the fish before they disperse, throw a Mack Farr 1/2 oz buck tail with a small fluke trailer. You can also use a spinning rod to toss a herring, small gizzard shad or threadfin on a weighted float into the center of the activity. Keep your bait about three feet below the float. When a quality Striper nails the bait on the surface; hang on! If the Birds are actively searching an area, set out a spread with baits 40 feet behind your boards, free lines 80 to 100 feet back and a couple down rods. Try both weighted and non weighted free lines. You can also use Umbrella rigs to quickly search an area. When the sun gets up your best bet is to switch to down rods over bait half way back in the creeks. If possible, take a variety of Herring, Trout and Gizzard shad to the lake. Remember to keep your hook size matched to the size of your bait. Flowery Branch, Six Mile, and Flat creek are good places to start on the south end. On the North end try Johnson, Latham Creek, Little River and Sardis Creek. We teach “ON THE WATER SCHOOLS” for SONAR and Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass. Call for details. Call for details.

WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 5.75 FEET, DIRTY & 52 DEGREES BY CHRIS BELL

Bass fishing has been good. Water levels have continued to come up and temperatures have stayed consistent. Morning water temperatures are starting around fifty two degrees increasing to fifty five mid day. Do not be discouraged if you do not pick up early morning bites as temperatures increase so do the bites. Fishing a drop shot rig and jigging spoon on off shore structure is picking up most of the bites for numbers. You can catch some really healthy spots right now. For our finicky largemouth the best pattern has been covering a lot of water with small mid depth crank baits such as a Bandit 200 series or Bomber 4A. The better colors have either been in a chartreuse or craw patterns.

Hybrid and striper fishing is great. Fish have positioned on top of humps and road beds. Using live shad dropped down to schools of fish is working the best. Use your depth finders to locate fish. You may have to check multiple areas before locating fish with the recent changes in water levels.

Crappie fishing has been fair. Fish have begun pulling into creeks and pockets about half way in. These fish are following shad that have migrated in with the new water depths. Troll minnow tipped jigs in black/chartreuse or pink/white colors. Look for fish to be positioned in the twelve to fifteen feet depths. Troll jigs at depths ten to twelve feet to catch feeding fish

LAKE ALLATOONA IS DOWN 13.6 FEET, STAINED AND 57

This bass fishing report is from Matt Driver 404-456-6094 www.proanglerradio.com

Bass fishing is good and there has been little change al nights being below freezing. The first few days of the cold snap were not that great for fishing due to a lot of shallow fish shut down with such a drastic change in temps but now things are getting back to normal January fishing on Allatoona. The bait is more concentrated and suspending in the 15 to 20 ft range. As we all know where the bait is so will the bass be. Use your electronics to find bait ball, and use drops shot rigs and the float n fly. Use a slower approach than we’ve used in earlier weeks. I believe we will see some bigger fish caught in the near future with more cold fronts forecasted in coming weeks. January is a great time to catch a trophy spot on Lake Allatoona.

This Lake Allatoona Fishing Guides Fishing Report Is Bought to You by Robert Eidson of First Bite Guide Service 770 827-6282 www,firstbiteguideservice.com.

LAKE HARTWELL IS DOWN 8.09 FEET, CLEAR & 53 DEGREES

Bass fishing is fair. The bass are back to a normal winter pattern. There is a lot of wind this week and this will move the larger bass deep to structure. Wind blown points are still my favorite along with short stretches of red clay banks mixed with chunk rock. The points as well as the banks need to have deep water or a channel that runs close by. The bass are holding in the deeper water for the most part and move in and out on these areas to feed during the day. Even when the bass are holding in ten to fifteen feet of water and more, they will still hit deep diving crank baits like the DT10 and DT16. Another good choice for this deeper cranking is the new Glass Shad Rap in the number 7 size. For those anglers that just love to use deep water jigging spoons, some nice bass along with a variety of other fish are being caught using this method. Find the fish and the structure and have at it. Most fishermen are concentrating their efforts in water anywhere from 25 to 45 feet deep. Downsize your line and tackle for best results. Learn how to use the Lowrance Structure Scan and Down Scan technology with Southern Fishing “On the Water” fishing schools.

January 13, 2012

CLARKS HILL IS DOWN 9.31 FEET, 52 DEGREES & STAINED

Bass fishing is fair but the wind will slow it down little until the warm up comes back. A jig will catch you the bigger bass while the crank baits will continue to put up some numbers. Use the DT10 primarily during the winter months in a variety of colors, depending on the water clarity. The more stained the water is, the darker the color should be. DT07 Flat bait is a good second choice while fishing rocky areas, such as rip rap. Also use the football head Jig and pick apart the bottom structure and channel ledges. These two types of fishing methods will be good enough to last until spring, no matter what Lake you are fishing. Ditches all over the lake anywhere from 15 to 40 feet deer is where the larger bass will hang out. Jigs are the perfect bait for this way of fishing. Just make sure you purchase the lures that come with patience. Winter fishing can be a little slower than the rest of the year but it is the time when most of the large bass bite. See our web site for Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale.

January 13, 2012

LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 2.88 FEET, CLEAR & 53 DEGREES

Bass fishing is fair. After the winds settle and with some bright sunny days, the bass will feed. Crank baits seem to be the favorite early in the morning. Bass are still biting the Carolina rigs. This will work but the bigger bass seem to want a slow moving bait like the DT10 or DT6. The DT6’s in the shad and silver are working the best and with the cooler waters. Rocky points are still the favorite this week and stay on the main lake. Those that are heading back into the creeks and coves are just getting a few small bites while throwing plastics. The bass are suspending in the channels and deeper water and move up early and late to feed. The big largemouth and especially the spots like the bigger slower moving crank baits. Rocks, deep water and wind are the key thing to look for this week. See our web site for Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale.

LAKE SEMINOLE IS DOWN ONE FOOT, CLEAR, 55 DEGREES BY MATT BATY

Bass fishing is good. The recent cold front cooled down the water temperatures and really grouped the fish up in tight schools. Look for grass points that are close to the edge of sandbars, as the fish will use these as staging areas. To catch fish off of these areas, use two crank baits. A Spro Little John in Nasty Shad works well on the shallower points from 3-5 feet of water. This bait has a circuit board lip and has tremendous action and comes through the grass really good. The other crank bait goes a little deeper and does not have a rattle. It is a Stanford Cedar Shad, the Razor Shad in Medium Diver. Any shad color will work. This bait is extremely buoyant and floats out of the grass really well. I would definitely change the hooks on it, though, to size 2 Gamakatsu EWG Treble Hooks. Another pattern that is emerging is flipping dead hyacinths on the Chattahoochee River. Look for dead hyacinths in the pockets or canals off of the main river and flip a Big Bite Baits Yo Daddy in Black/Blue with a 1 1/2 oz. tungsten weight. Use a 4/0 Gamakatsu Heavy Cover Worm Hook and 65 lb. Sunline FX2 Braid. Learn how to use the Lowrance Structure Scan and Down Scan technology with Southern Fishing “On the Water” fishing schools.

Bass fishing is slow and more rain will keep the lake muddy. The rising and falling waters do not help any action. The bass are deep on heavy cover. Use a larger dark u tail worm on a Texas rig. Larger jigs with a pork trailer will work on the docks. These deeper docks have new brush and the fish have to force fed. Pitch and flip worms or jigs around and in this heavy brush. Look for any brush on the points and docks on the lake. Down lake, use the Enticer black and blue or all black 1/2 ounce jig and a larger Pro Pork Trailer by Uncle Josh on the heavy cover. The gourd green u tail Zoom worms on a Texas rig is fair just fish these baits slowly. We teach “ON THE WATER SCHOOLS” for SONAR and Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass. Call for details. LAKE WEISS IS DOWN 5.79 FEET, 45 DEGREES & STAINED

Now available for sale 50 of my proven GPS waypoints for off shore structure for Bass and Crappie fishing on Weiss Lake, Alabama. E mail ken@havefunfishing.com

Bass fishing is fair and the bass have moved to a deeper winter pattern, some Bass are being caught on rip rap rocks on jigs.

Striper fishing is poor but the fish are due to turn on any day.

January 13, 2012

LAKE SINCLAIR IS DOWN 1.82 FEET, 54 DEGREES, MOSTLY STAINED.

Bass fishing continues to be a challenge but we are in the dead of winter. Look for bass to be in the twelve to twenty five feet range near points, ledges, roadbeds and humps. Spend time looking for schools of shad. When you see bait, mark the area and fish it slowly with a 1/2 ounce Flex It or Hopkins spoon, a 3/8 or 1/2 ounce football jig or a Carolina rig with a small finesse worm. Use light line no larger than 12 pound test to increase sensitivity. Most of the fish being caught are from Nancy’s Branch and south to the dam. Rely on your Lowrance to locate the pods of shad and don’t leave an area until you are confident you’ve covered every inch of that structure. If you think you are fishing slow and can count the number of bites you’ve gotten on one hand, you may need to fish even slower for better results. We teach “ON THE WATER SCHOOLS” for SONAR and Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass. Call for details. Call for details.

LAKE OCONEE IS FULL, 50 DEGREES.

Bass fishing is fair and the main lake is clear, stained to muddy up the rivers. The fish are tight to cover. Or they are roaming the deep water suspended near the river channel. The best bite is under boat docks near deeper water. This means main lake docks, if the docks have structure under them then that is even better. A dark jig with a claw trailer seams to be working the best. Think slow and the bite will be light. You can still pick up a few fish at the bridge rip rap if Georgia Power is pulling water. Use a number 7 Shad Rap in a shad color.

Lake Oconee Line Side report brought to you by Mark Smith at Reel Time Guide Service. 404-803-0741. wwwreeltimeguideservice.com

Line side fishing is good. The stripers and hybrids continue to bite down near the dam. You can use a number of tactics to catch these fish. The umbrella rigs are still producing good number as it the live shad bite. Use your Lowrance to locate the schools of bait and drop your bait in the schools. The stripers may not show on the Lowrance but they are close to the bait. Keep a Capt Mac spoon tied on. There are times that it will out produce the live bait.

Crappie fishing is good. The fish are in the middle of most creeks and big coves. Spider rigging is working as well as finding the fish on your Lowrance and dropping live bait to them. Tip you jig with a minnow to increase your bite. Lick and Sugar Creek have been out producing most of the other creeks. We will be starting my crappie trips this month. Give me a call and we will try and fill your cooler with big slabs. Remember to stop by Sugar Creek Marina for all your bass and striper needs. They have Capt. Mack’s umbrella rigs in stock along with the Capt. Mack spoons. Call about our “ON THE WATER SCHOOLS” for SONAR and Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass. Call for 770-889-2654 for details.

JACKSON LAKE IS DOWN 4.51 FEET, STAINED 51 DEGREES

Bass fishing is fair but the water temperatures are dropping daily and the spotted bass are scattered. Anglers are reporting everything from and occasional spinnerbaits and the jigs. Work the shallows in and around the main lake points but work the bait all the way back to the boat. A few strikes are occurring within a few feet of the boat out in deeper water. Work the brush piles you find around the docks. A lot of Christmas trees have been put around these docks and are starting to hold fish. Follow the spinner bait up with a jig or better yet throw a purple 4 1/2 inch Storm worm right in the brush pile or under the dock. The added scent and rattle that is built in will aid in getting the bite. A slow presentation is a must this time of the year. Red Drum Tackle shop fishing report, Buxton 1-11

Monday Afternoon, yawn.

Even though there proceeds to be pretty very good and secretive speckle trout action, the total scene is quite slow. Rained both final night time and some what these days.

The specks are being taken but not talked about way too a lot. Try hunting at ramp 34, the motel region, the jetties and then once more at ramp 43.

Doggies and skates carry on to be abundant and the shell hunting for the walkers is great, good, and I am gone.

Very best,

Bob

Tuesday and what a fairly day it is!

Well that about sums it up. Sunshine, doggies, skates and not considerably else on the surf scene. The southeast wind of the subsequent few of times ought to support especially for the specks.

There have been pups on Ocracoke on gold hopkins. Bluefins showing up each offshore and in the close by waters north. Shelling is even now good.

Greatest to you,

Bob

Wednesday Afternoon – Rain, Rain go away!

Not rarely a point to discuss about right now. Rain has been off and on since this morning. The weatherman (guesser) sayes se to sw wind for the next several times and who is aware what that will produce. Nevertheless genuinely warm out.

Very best and give me a get in touch with if you listen to of fish. Very good blackfinning offshore.

Swinging weather designs have the fish on the transfer…The redfish have been thick on the shallow flats, but spooky. I have pushed a number of colleges of reds and even noticed some trout hanging all around the outer oyster bars. The water has been so clear that you can see the bottom in eight ft of water at instances. Spotting fish is very interesting, but can be aggrevating when they won’t bite. Ultimately, I have had enough…a buddy around the Southport location has been drilling the trout, so I went to check it out. If you will not thoughts a lengthy boat ride the fish seem to be to be cooperating a minor far better in the Southport region. The drinking water temperature would seem to be keeping about three to 4 degrees warmer and h2o color is a minor darker making it easier to do a sneak. A excellent class of trout in the 2 to four pound variety are biting a range of soft plastics in vivid colour styles. Even a flounder or two is still hanging all around. Check out it out! See ya on the water!

A number of spottails have been caught, but the trout have been challenging to track down.

Charleston

Redfish: Excellent. Haddrell’s Stage reports fantastic quantities of redfish (at times one hundred+ fish in a school) have been schooling up on the reduced tide flats and are eagerly using all types of baits such as Gulp! jerkshads, Gulp! swimming mullet. The old stand-by baits such as mud minnows and reduce mullet are also really efficient this time of 12 months.
Sheepshead: Good. Haddrell’s reports fish are nevertheless feeding greatly along composition in eight-20 ft of water with fiddler crabs, oysters, and barnacles being the top rated bait options.

Beaufort

Spottail Bass: Excellent. It’s been cold enough for fish to college and there are a number of bait fish about (mullet). Find the school on the flat and you are very good. Artificials and minnows are producing.
Trout: Reasonable. Come across the deep holes. DOA Shrimp and spoons will the two operate.

Surf Report

Still not a thing to report…

Fly fishing report

One December Day in 2011

Homer Collins and Philip James went a fishing or should I say, “Went a catching a bunch!”

Philip James and “World Famous” Homer Collins

Philip and Homer decided to do a little inshore fishing. Once loading the boat with all their tackle, ice, lunch, and serious live well full of swimming shrimp off this duo went.

It was early morning and the plan was to get to their fishing spot and be set up by the turn of the incoming tide stage.

After arriving at the secret spot, the anchor was quietly dropped, and hooks were baited. The conversation went from this looks like a good day too well maybe the fish aren’t going to bite today. As soon as that came out of their mouths the setting of the hook happened. The end results were quite a nice cooler full of fish. In the black drum department they caught a really nice one, which required the usage of the old dip net! This necessary step was needed to be taken before this big boy could be put in the cooler. It’s a known fact that most nice size fish are lost right at the gunnels of the boat. However, seasoned Homer knew to wait for the dipping of the net before bringing it onboard. Then a few nice red fish happened by and took them up on their live shrimp bait offering. As the incoming water got deeper the bite got bigger. A school of spotted sea trout moved in and this is when the fun really started. Trout bites started happening and the rods started bending. Their first boated trout measured in at around 14 inches. However, after trout catching deal got sealed they got even bigger. They ended up with spotted sea trout in the 28 inch range. Say what you want but these are big trout! And a big congratulation goes out to Philip James and “World Famous” Homer Collins!! Please go to “Little Miss Judy’s Believe It or Not! For the rest of the story about Homer Collins!

Philip James and Homer Collins laid out catching results!

Now this is what I call a whole bunch of fish fillets, pieces, and chunks! From where I am counting we have 20 large fillets or 40 very large pieces of fish or 80 chunks or 160 big bite size fish fingers. No matter how you cut or say it this was a great day of fishing for Philip James and World Famous Homer Collins!!

Sheepshead fishing Inshore

“Daniel Sheepshead Special!”

Report from Daniel Carter-Sweatte

Daniel Carter-Sweatte caught quite a few sheepshead inshore while using fiddler crabs as bait and his own personal custom designed rig. He caught 8 nice sheepshead while fishing along inshore structure on an out going tide stage. Daniel even shared his rig and it goes something like this: According to his report you can use braided or monofilament as main line. The secret is what you tie to it. The leader used was 2 feet long and was made of 25 to 40 pound test fluorocarbon line. This leader is tied directly to main line with uni-knot or a basic line to line knot. On the end of the leader he tied on a small, but beefy as well as sharp trout style hook. Daniel placed 2 small split shots a couple inches above the hook. And if you make this rig you should call it the “Daniel Sheepshead Special!”

Inshore and offshore flounder fishing

Captain Kathy Brown of Miss Judy Charters

The old flounder is a fish that can be caught inshore as well as offshore. Best baits are those that are alive such as mud minnow, peanut menhaden, shrimp, and sand perch. My father used to say the flounder sees like a rabbit, is as cunning as a fox, and strikes like a cobra…..now I don’t know about you but this sounds like just my kind of fish!!

Blue Water Catching Report

X-TA-SEA Strikes Again!!

Sunday January 8, 2012

38 MAHI MAHI and 14 black fin tuna

The good looking X-TRA-SEA fishing crew with a fine display of fish. The fish count ended with 38 MAHI MAHI and 14 black fin tuna!! Quite a tally!!

The crew had been keeping an eye on the weather and waves all week. It was decided to make the run to the ledge Sunday and stay the night at the sword grounds. On the trip were Chris, Zane, Zack, Brendin, Kent Phillips and Brian Williams.

According to the report the ride was nice and smooth all the way to the Navy tower, which is where they caught bunch of sardines and then ran to the ledge. There were a few other boats working the area and after speaking with them on the radio it didn’t sound too promising. One boat has 1 MAHI and the other had a Wahoo bite-off!

Captain Chris said….

We set out our spread and things were slow. We managed to pick up one Bonita and one black fin after a few hours of trolling. Zane spotted a rip in deeper water so we trolled in that direction. We found a 1.5 degree temperature change on the other side and the weeds were piled up. We trolled the warm side of the rip and could see mahi jumping out of the water in front of us. We would hardly get trolling when a rod or two or three would go off with mahi jumping on the other end. We caught them on live baits, cedar plugs, spoons and home-made lures. Some were too small but most were keeper size with a few gaffers mixed in. It was non-stop action until it was time to head for the swordfish grounds.

Early in the first drift we landed and released an undersized swordfish which turned out to be the only sword of the night.

We were back at the ledge well before light so we were ready for the first light bite. No sooner did we get the first bait in the water and it was fish on. After a bit of give and take a nice fat black fin came to gaff. The action was hot with multiple hook-ups at a time and it seemed we lost as many fish as we landed. Once the sun came up the bite turned off.

Again we were trolling for hours with just one more black fin and a few Bonita. We saw fish holding near the bottom so we decided to drop some hi-speed jigs down and see if they were tuna. After just a few quick lifts on the rods, they double over with fish that clearly didn’t want to leave the bottom. After bringing the fourth 40 plus lb. amberjack to the top, we decided we should troll a bit longer. The wind picked up and so did the waves. With the crew weary from fishing since the prior morning we decided it was time to call it a day. We did a fish count and then cleaned up the boat before breaking out the bean bags for the long run in. We ended up with 38 mahi mahi with the largest at 15 lbs. and we had 14 black fin with the largest at 31 lbs.

Congratulations to the crew on board “X-TRA-SEA!” I have to say this…When you know where the fish are the easiest part sometimes is catching them! And of course as you can see this crew is in the knowing!

Little Miss Judy’s Believe It or Not!

World Famous Homer Collins saved the day!!

One night at Mitchell’s bar

Philip James and “World Famous” Homer Collins

During the late fifties on Wilmington Island there was this bar called “Mitchell’s. This was called the local watering hole by many including my father. It was built just like a log cabin. The fact of the matter is there were quite a few actual log cabins of all sizes built on Wilmington Island. Mitchell’s wasn’t just any old bar. It was a package shop and a grocery store complete with a separate meat display box refrigerator. Back during this time I think this was the only store on Wilmington Island with the exception of Round tree’s Service Station, but that’s another story for later down the rod.

When you walked into Mitchell’s the first thing you came too was the grocery store, which carried all kinds of can goods and then there was the cookies isle. Of course an 8 year old would be interested in this isle. To the left of the grocery store area there was a door, which was where the package shop was located. From the front of the store you could see the neon lights blinking over the separate door to the package store. After getting inside it was all the same building. It just looked separate outside. Before I move on from this area I have got to tell you about the meat display refrigerator. At least that is what I called it. It was very big and it had a glass window in front. I guess so that you could see the meat inside. Well, my father wanted some bologna one night so he had Archie Mitchell, store owner and fiend, cut us up some meat. All meats had a nice red color. When we got home with the meat we could not eat it, because daddy said “He had never seen brown bologna before!” This was the last time we brought meat there. We later found out that the lights in the meat display were red making everything look just perfect!!!

However, my father brought lots of other things from Mitchell’s store. The fact of the matter is we were there a lot and I spent a whole bunch of time looking at those shelves of cookies. After walking through the grocery store there was a big room with chairs and tables. On one end was TV, which was mounted over head in a corner. On the other end was the biggest moose head that I have ever seen. It had a very large rack and a big set of black eyes, which seemed to follow me as I walked around the room. I started to tell daddy, but I thought better of it. In the back of the room was another door of which I never walked through. However, my father passed through it many times. While he was behind this door I would always make my self at home just looking around and not trying to stare at the moose hanging on the wall.

There was this one occasion where daddy told me that if I wanted to get some cookies off the shelf I certainly could. Boy, this was different. As soon as daddy passed through the door to somewhere I raced to get to the cookie isle. I remember thinking, “Which cookies do I want? And how do I know?” Well, I really can’t say for sure how this happened, but I started opening boxes. After all I had plenty of time. After tasting the cookies that I opened I finally found one that really got my attention. It was kind like a Vanilla wafer that we know today. However, each cookie was a sandwich made with a marshmallow smashed in the middle. There were so very good too!!

When my father finally came back through the door there I was in the isle on the shelf with all the opened cookie boxes. It wasn’t until then that I figured out that I might have done something wrong. Well, my father looked at all the boxes and then asked Mr. Mitchell, ‘How much do I owe you?” My father picked me up and Mr. Mitchell counted the open boxes of cookies. Then he paused and said, “You know I have some big glass jars over there that I keep cookies in. I will just dump all of them into the jars.” The only thing you owe me for was the boxes of cookies, which are in Judy’s hand.” Little did or maybe he knew, but I think Mr. Mitchell most likely saved me from being put on “a restriction of no more cookies!”

A few weeks ago Homer and I got to talking about old times. Well, Mitchell’s Store came up in the conversation and Homer’s eyes widened. And then he told me this story about my father….

According to Homer he had stopped at Mitchell’s to pick up something before heading home and he heard some noises coming from the back room. Homer said, “The noises weren’t on a friendly note.” So therefore he walked into the back room and as he did he saw a man busting a beer bottle over the edge of the table. Homer, then hollowed “hey now!” and the man turned with broken beer bottle in hand and said, “This is none of your business!” Homer said, “I am making it my business!” No sooner did this come out of his mouth did he notice that my father was the other man. According to Homer my father wasn’t excited nor did he look angry. Not only that, but he didn’t look scare either.

Now Homer knew he had to be the mediator so as to get this one sided battle stopped. According to Homer, Daddy just sat there smiling like an “old Chessy Cat,” which seemed to even anger the man holding the bottle even more. Homer quickly stepped in and said, “You really don’t want to do this even if you think it is necessary!” As soon as a third party was added it seemed like the man with broken bottle had lost a little of his beating up desires.

Although this is the worst copy of a picture ever…if you look close you will see my father “Old Chessy Cat smile!”

As Homer and I talked he said, “Your father never broke a smile and he didn’t even say anything!” As Homer talked to man that wanted to fight a bit of his anger was lost. Then it seemed the man with the broken bottle couldn’t get out of the door fast enough. At this time my father said, “Hey, Homer can I buy you a drink?” They sat for a while and talked. And of course I had to ask, “What did daddy say about the man?” Homer replied with a somewhat of his own “Old Chessy Cat smile…Your father said, “It was all about her liking me more!”

So therefore thanks to great meditations of “the world famous Homer Collins” there was no one sided dual from dealing with my daddy’s old school habits!!!

Thanks for reading! Captain Judy

Fishin’ With Capt. Gus! Fishing at the Boat Ramp 1-15-12

Fishin’ With Capt. Gus!
Fishing at the Boat Ramp
1-fifteen-twelve

John Wendel of Advance, NC keeping a pair of striped bass he caught on a January 2012, Lake Norman fishing trip

Ever before wonder why you see so a lot of people fishing near public boat ramps? It seems as even though the busier the start spot is, the far more fishing you see.

The largest good reasons are easy. Cement ramps are generally steep and afford fish effortless access to the shade and cover from the floating docks utilized throughout loading and unloading. In addition, where the cement ramp meets the lake bottom, there is a hollowed out deep spot called the “blow hole.” This underwater crater is manufactured from the backwash of spinning boat propellers whilst the boat is becoming loaded on the trailer. A blow hole is the excellent spot for bass and other predators to lie in wait around for unsuspecting baitfish to swim by. Like personal docks, not all boat ramps have fish, but every single holds its share from time to time.

Arguably, the most productive nearby ramps are people at Pinnacle Access, largely owing to the existence of extremely huge rocks immediately in front and marginally to the north of the launch spot. In addition, the Highway one hundred fifty Bridge and causeway affords a lot of cover for all types of sport fish.

On the south side of Highway one hundred fifty is McCrary Creek Boat Obtain, with its steep ramp in the back of a cove. At occasions, especially in the course of the colder months, baitfish acquire around its ramps, they in flip, attract bass and an occasional striper. Far better however, on the way out to the primary channel and just outside of the docks at Queen’s Landing, is a series of shoals latticed with deep finger channels.

Further more to the south, in between channel Markers 12 and 14, is Hager’s Obtain. Simply because of its’ out of the way area, it is lightly utilised besides for weekends. But, the ramp area retains plenty of bass, particularly early in the early morning. That’s when a continual stream of fishermen cast almost everything from buzz-baits to bottom bumping shaky head jigs under the floating docks and on the rip-rap point just to the south.

Guidelines from Capt. Gus: The ramps at Blythe, McCrary, Pinnacle and the New Midway Marina are popular weigh-in internet sites for bass tournaments. Right after getting weighed, the fish are introduced close by, and most don’t stray extremely way – an additional cause to fish around boat ramps.

Free of charge SEMINAR – “Use Your Lowrance or Humminbird Fish Finder to Catch Bass, White Perch and Stripers”. Scorching Spots of the Week: The ideal way to identify feeding fish in January is to look at for sea birds dipping or diving into the h2o. The bigger fish beneath (spotted bass, white perch and stripers) have chased the baitfish to the surface wherever the birds are feeding. Greatest lures to use are buck tails, spoons, swim/vibrating baits and Sabiki or Alabama rigs. Crappie fishing has been incredibly good for those fishing around submerged brush piles and other deep-h2o attractors. With colder water temperatures, a lot more fishermen are fishing the hot holes. Bloodworms, mussels, and chicken areas are very good baits for bottom feeding species.

The surface area water temperature is in the forties and lower fifties. The lake degree is about three.0′ below entire pond on Lake Norman and all around 2.7′ beneath total on Mountain Island Lake.

Mountains Area

Lake Jocassee: (unchanged from Jan. 5)

Trout: Fair. Fish can be caught from the surface area down to 50 feet by anglers fishing trolling spoons and shiners trolling huge shiners looks to be the very best way to steer clear of modest fish. The bite must keep on to improve for the following few months.
Black Bass: Fair. Fishing is day to day, but very good fish can be located in pockets off the major lake, and trout are mixed in with bass. Fishing under universities of bait is also a great wager. Surface area activity is becoming reported and bass will get a lure that thrown correct on their head soon after they demonstrate themselves. Red Eye Shad, Float-n-fly rigs and jerkbaits will all catch fish.

Lake Keowee:

Largemouth and Spotted Bass: Excellent. The moderate weather so far this winter has stored most of the fish shallower than typical. Use shakey head worms in twenty five feet of h2o. Also some bass on Carolina rigged worms fished off primary lake factors in 25-thirty ft of drinking water.

Lake Hartwell:

Largemouth Bass: Very good. The mild weather conditions is trying to keep ’em shallow. Search anyplace there is wood go over. Slow moving soft plastics or jigs are functioning.
Catfish: Fair to Great. Blues are performing properly on reduce bait in 30 ft of h2o about details, but they have not moved into creeks nevertheless. Some channel cats can be caught on reduce herring, but they are mostly fished out.
Striped and Hybrid Bass: Fair. Totally free lining or umbrella rigs are producing, but the fish are scattered all more than from creeks to the main channel. Search for wood in 80 ft of drinking water about ten to 15 ft down.
Crappie. Reasonable. Check out bridge pilings at twelve-15 ft above thirty ft. Moderate weather conditions has some night time action with lighting on.

Piedmont Spot

Lake Russell: (unchanged from Jan. five)

Largemouth and Spotted Bass: Great. Catch bass mid-lake in 25-35 ft of h2o just off the primary channel. The essential is fishing close to the universities of bait. Jigging spoons are the synthetic lures of selection and minnows will also catch fish. eighty% of the bass caught have been spotted bass, but largemouths are also combined in as properly as other species. The best fishing seems to arrive in the middle of the day when the sunlight has been on the drinking water for many hours.
Perch and crappie: Very good. A lot of white perch, yellow perch and crappie caught about colleges of bait in 30-35 ft of drinking water. Fish medium minnows just off the bottom and anticipate a mixed bag with some bass and catfish thrown in, way too.

Lake Thurmond:

Striped and Hybrid Bass: Great. Check out the mid-lake region pulling planer boards more than 20-thirty ft of drinking water.

Lake Wylie:

Largemouth Bass: Honest. Catch fish primarily on deep spoons about twenty ft about channels and points. The major position is come across the bait. There even now could be some fish shallow around the warm discharges.

Midlands Spot

Lake Greenwood:

Largemouth Bass: Reasonable. Alabama rigs are turning out to be rather common and are demonstrating some benefits. Spinnerbaits, crankbaits and worms off points are also working.
Crappie: Excellent. Odd on the lake for this time of 12 months, but minnows are producing at twelve-fifteen feet.

Lake Monticello: (unchanged from Jan. five)

Catfish: Excellent. Captain Chris Simpson reports that the large fish bite has been quite great but really should get even much better in the coming weeks. Some huge fish have been caught free line drifting and Santee-fashion drifting, but anchoring has been the most successful way to catch a trophy. 35-60 feet has been a very good depth variety, and some times the fish can get in a extremely narrow band such as 55-sixty feet – and fishing at any other depth can be a waste of time. Obtaining colleges of bait balls on your depth finder is crucial, but obtaining bait balls that are more compact and a lot more broken up (which means fish are feeding on them) is a lot more critical. A assortment of bottom construction has been effective, which includes deep flats, vertical ledges and everything in between. Gizzard shad, white perch, and crappie have all been very good baits.

Lake Wateree:

Crappie: Very good. The best fishing is had up the river or at the top rated of the lake on the ledge of the river channel. Fish in about 18-twenty five feet.
Largemouth Bass: Great. Captain Chris Heinning studies that the bass bite is still very good on Lake Wateree due to moderate air temperatures. Most fish are being caught around rocky factors in the vicinity of deep h2o with crankbaits, jigs, and shakey heads. The jig bite has gotten strong with some good top quality fish. Dock fishing around deeper docks with gentle plastics is also a excellent wager. Additionally, there is a jerkbait bite in the back of some creeks.

Lake Murray:

Crappie: Honest. Fish are feeding in a winter pattern up the rivers in 8-12 ft over fifteen feet. Free lining rods and fishing close to docks and bridges are producing.
Largemouth Bass: Honest. Fish are even now shallow owing to the hotter weather conditions, but it really is primarily the scaled-down fish. The bigger fish are at 15-eighteen ft especially early in the day. Use crank bait and jigs. Also check out shallow about rocky details.
Striper: Reasonable. Up the lake in the rivers location is making. Adhere to the birds. Totally free lining is catching fish with warmer weather conditions, but the fish are scattered.

Santee Cooper Technique

Catfish: Honest to excellent. Captain Jim Glenn reports that most times the blue catfish bite is honest to great, and fish are becoming caught in numerous depths from four-10 feet on down to fifty feet. The concentrations may be biggest in deeper drinking water. Both anchoring and drifting with new cut gizzard shad, menhaden, perch or mullet will catch fish in the appropriate spots.
Striped Bass: Fair to great. Captain Jim Glenn reviews that anglers are catching a great deal of striped bass in equally lakes, but really handful of 26 inch fish are currently being landed. Possibly 1 in fifty is a keeper for most anglers, but the good news is that striper seem plentiful and most are strong and balanced. Fishing 35-50 feet deep with live baits such as big shiners and gizzard or threadfin shad is operating, and anglers are also getting accomplishment trolling and chasing schooling fish on the surface area with jigs, spoons and surface plugs.
Shellcracker: Sluggish. Some caught in creek channels, but not actually value putting a line in for them.
