One December Day in 2011

Homer Collins and Philip James went a fishing or should I say, “Went a catching a bunch!”

Philip James and “World Famous” Homer Collins

Philip and Homer decided to do a little inshore fishing. Once loading the boat with all their tackle, ice, lunch, and serious live well full of swimming shrimp off this duo went.

It was early morning and the plan was to get to their fishing spot and be set up by the turn of the incoming tide stage.

After arriving at the secret spot, the anchor was quietly dropped, and hooks were baited. The conversation went from this looks like a good day too well maybe the fish aren’t going to bite today. As soon as that came out of their mouths the setting of the hook happened. The end results were quite a nice cooler full of fish. In the black drum department they caught a really nice one, which required the usage of the old dip net! This necessary step was needed to be taken before this big boy could be put in the cooler. It’s a known fact that most nice size fish are lost right at the gunnels of the boat. However, seasoned Homer knew to wait for the dipping of the net before bringing it onboard. Then a few nice red fish happened by and took them up on their live shrimp bait offering. As the incoming water got deeper the bite got bigger. A school of spotted sea trout moved in and this is when the fun really started. Trout bites started happening and the rods started bending. Their first boated trout measured in at around 14 inches. However, after trout catching deal got sealed they got even bigger. They ended up with spotted sea trout in the 28 inch range. Say what you want but these are big trout! And a big congratulation goes out to Philip James and “World Famous” Homer Collins!! Please go to “Little Miss Judy’s Believe It or Not! For the rest of the story about Homer Collins!

Philip James and Homer Collins laid out catching results!

Now this is what I call a whole bunch of fish fillets, pieces, and chunks! From where I am counting we have 20 large fillets or 40 very large pieces of fish or 80 chunks or 160 big bite size fish fingers. No matter how you cut or say it this was a great day of fishing for Philip James and World Famous Homer Collins!!

Sheepshead fishing Inshore

“Daniel Sheepshead Special!”

Report from Daniel Carter-Sweatte

Daniel Carter-Sweatte caught quite a few sheepshead inshore while using fiddler crabs as bait and his own personal custom designed rig. He caught 8 nice sheepshead while fishing along inshore structure on an out going tide stage. Daniel even shared his rig and it goes something like this: According to his report you can use braided or monofilament as main line. The secret is what you tie to it. The leader used was 2 feet long and was made of 25 to 40 pound test fluorocarbon line. This leader is tied directly to main line with uni-knot or a basic line to line knot. On the end of the leader he tied on a small, but beefy as well as sharp trout style hook. Daniel placed 2 small split shots a couple inches above the hook. And if you make this rig you should call it the “Daniel Sheepshead Special!”

Inshore and offshore flounder fishing

Captain Kathy Brown of Miss Judy Charters

The old flounder is a fish that can be caught inshore as well as offshore. Best baits are those that are alive such as mud minnow, peanut menhaden, shrimp, and sand perch. My father used to say the flounder sees like a rabbit, is as cunning as a fox, and strikes like a cobra…..now I don’t know about you but this sounds like just my kind of fish!!

X-TA-SEA Strikes Again!!

Sunday January 8, 2012

38 MAHI MAHI and 14 black fin tuna

The good looking X-TRA-SEA fishing crew with a fine display of fish. The fish count ended with 38 MAHI MAHI and 14 black fin tuna!! Quite a tally!!

The crew had been keeping an eye on the weather and waves all week. It was decided to make the run to the ledge Sunday and stay the night at the sword grounds. On the trip were Chris, Zane, Zack, Brendin, Kent Phillips and Brian Williams.

According to the report the ride was nice and smooth all the way to the Navy tower, which is where they caught bunch of sardines and then ran to the ledge. There were a few other boats working the area and after speaking with them on the radio it didn’t sound too promising. One boat has 1 MAHI and the other had a Wahoo bite-off!

Captain Chris said….

We set out our spread and things were slow. We managed to pick up one Bonita and one black fin after a few hours of trolling. Zane spotted a rip in deeper water so we trolled in that direction. We found a 1.5 degree temperature change on the other side and the weeds were piled up. We trolled the warm side of the rip and could see mahi jumping out of the water in front of us. We would hardly get trolling when a rod or two or three would go off with mahi jumping on the other end. We caught them on live baits, cedar plugs, spoons and home-made lures. Some were too small but most were keeper size with a few gaffers mixed in. It was non-stop action until it was time to head for the swordfish grounds.

Early in the first drift we landed and released an undersized swordfish which turned out to be the only sword of the night.

We were back at the ledge well before light so we were ready for the first light bite. No sooner did we get the first bait in the water and it was fish on. After a bit of give and take a nice fat black fin came to gaff. The action was hot with multiple hook-ups at a time and it seemed we lost as many fish as we landed. Once the sun came up the bite turned off.

Again we were trolling for hours with just one more black fin and a few Bonita. We saw fish holding near the bottom so we decided to drop some hi-speed jigs down and see if they were tuna. After just a few quick lifts on the rods, they double over with fish that clearly didn’t want to leave the bottom. After bringing the fourth 40 plus lb. amberjack to the top, we decided we should troll a bit longer. The wind picked up and so did the waves. With the crew weary from fishing since the prior morning we decided it was time to call it a day. We did a fish count and then cleaned up the boat before breaking out the bean bags for the long run in. We ended up with 38 mahi mahi with the largest at 15 lbs. and we had 14 black fin with the largest at 31 lbs.

Congratulations to the crew on board “X-TRA-SEA!” I have to say this…When you know where the fish are the easiest part sometimes is catching them! And of course as you can see this crew is in the knowing!

World Famous Homer Collins saved the day!!

One night at Mitchell’s bar

Philip James and “World Famous” Homer Collins

During the late fifties on Wilmington Island there was this bar called “Mitchell’s. This was called the local watering hole by many including my father. It was built just like a log cabin. The fact of the matter is there were quite a few actual log cabins of all sizes built on Wilmington Island. Mitchell’s wasn’t just any old bar. It was a package shop and a grocery store complete with a separate meat display box refrigerator. Back during this time I think this was the only store on Wilmington Island with the exception of Round tree’s Service Station, but that’s another story for later down the rod.

When you walked into Mitchell’s the first thing you came too was the grocery store, which carried all kinds of can goods and then there was the cookies isle. Of course an 8 year old would be interested in this isle. To the left of the grocery store area there was a door, which was where the package shop was located. From the front of the store you could see the neon lights blinking over the separate door to the package store. After getting inside it was all the same building. It just looked separate outside. Before I move on from this area I have got to tell you about the meat display refrigerator. At least that is what I called it. It was very big and it had a glass window in front. I guess so that you could see the meat inside. Well, my father wanted some bologna one night so he had Archie Mitchell, store owner and fiend, cut us up some meat. All meats had a nice red color. When we got home with the meat we could not eat it, because daddy said “He had never seen brown bologna before!” This was the last time we brought meat there. We later found out that the lights in the meat display were red making everything look just perfect!!!

However, my father brought lots of other things from Mitchell’s store. The fact of the matter is we were there a lot and I spent a whole bunch of time looking at those shelves of cookies. After walking through the grocery store there was a big room with chairs and tables. On one end was TV, which was mounted over head in a corner. On the other end was the biggest moose head that I have ever seen. It had a very large rack and a big set of black eyes, which seemed to follow me as I walked around the room. I started to tell daddy, but I thought better of it. In the back of the room was another door of which I never walked through. However, my father passed through it many times. While he was behind this door I would always make my self at home just looking around and not trying to stare at the moose hanging on the wall.

There was this one occasion where daddy told me that if I wanted to get some cookies off the shelf I certainly could. Boy, this was different. As soon as daddy passed through the door to somewhere I raced to get to the cookie isle. I remember thinking, “Which cookies do I want? And how do I know?” Well, I really can’t say for sure how this happened, but I started opening boxes. After all I had plenty of time. After tasting the cookies that I opened I finally found one that really got my attention. It was kind like a Vanilla wafer that we know today. However, each cookie was a sandwich made with a marshmallow smashed in the middle. There were so very good too!!

When my father finally came back through the door there I was in the isle on the shelf with all the opened cookie boxes. It wasn’t until then that I figured out that I might have done something wrong. Well, my father looked at all the boxes and then asked Mr. Mitchell, ‘How much do I owe you?” My father picked me up and Mr. Mitchell counted the open boxes of cookies. Then he paused and said, “You know I have some big glass jars over there that I keep cookies in. I will just dump all of them into the jars.” The only thing you owe me for was the boxes of cookies, which are in Judy’s hand.” Little did or maybe he knew, but I think Mr. Mitchell most likely saved me from being put on “a restriction of no more cookies!”

A few weeks ago Homer and I got to talking about old times. Well, Mitchell’s Store came up in the conversation and Homer’s eyes widened. And then he told me this story about my father….

According to Homer he had stopped at Mitchell’s to pick up something before heading home and he heard some noises coming from the back room. Homer said, “The noises weren’t on a friendly note.” So therefore he walked into the back room and as he did he saw a man busting a beer bottle over the edge of the table. Homer, then hollowed “hey now!” and the man turned with broken beer bottle in hand and said, “This is none of your business!” Homer said, “I am making it my business!” No sooner did this come out of his mouth did he notice that my father was the other man. According to Homer my father wasn’t excited nor did he look angry. Not only that, but he didn’t look scare either.

Now Homer knew he had to be the mediator so as to get this one sided battle stopped. According to Homer, Daddy just sat there smiling like an “old Chessy Cat,” which seemed to even anger the man holding the bottle even more. Homer quickly stepped in and said, “You really don’t want to do this even if you think it is necessary!” As soon as a third party was added it seemed like the man with broken bottle had lost a little of his beating up desires.

Although this is the worst copy of a picture ever…if you look close you will see my father “Old Chessy Cat smile!”

As Homer and I talked he said, “Your father never broke a smile and he didn’t even say anything!” As Homer talked to man that wanted to fight a bit of his anger was lost. Then it seemed the man with the broken bottle couldn’t get out of the door fast enough. At this time my father said, “Hey, Homer can I buy you a drink?” They sat for a while and talked. And of course I had to ask, “What did daddy say about the man?” Homer replied with a somewhat of his own “Old Chessy Cat smile…Your father said, “It was all about her liking me more!”

So therefore thanks to great meditations of “the world famous Homer Collins” there was no one sided dual from dealing with my daddy’s old school habits!!!

Thanks for reading! Captain Judy
