OIFC fishing report 9-19

NOAA&quot | OIFC Entire world Cat / Carolina Cat | 09/eighteen/eleven

Sometimes NOAA does not know a point! Off shore could have been rough, nevertheless around shore was flat and beautiful the previous couple of days. North winds at OIB virtually always imply flat seas close to shore.

Caqpt. Jeff Beck, Courtney and 1st Mate Camdyn anchored off at the very last buoy just outdoors the Shallotte Inlet and permit Camdyn tear in to the spot. Capt. Jeff explained they had so many lines out they appear like a floating fishing pier.

Meanwhile, Tommy Helms labored a in the vicinity of shore reef and brought back again some beautiful flounder. Brandon &quotBonecrusher&quot Sauls had a ball with the red drum at the Little River Jetties. Quite minor gasoline and a complete whole lot of exciting!

The Catfish Hunters
September eighteen, 2011

Local author, Jake Bussolini and Lake Norman Catfish Guidebook, Mac Byrum are co-authoring a e-book entitled “Catfish Hunters” which will be printed this winter season. Even though equally gentlemen are achieved anglers, they felt that value could be extra to their writings if they incorporated the expertise of other educated anglers and fishing guides. Collectively, they decided the ideal way to find out from the specialists would be to fish with them. So, as “Gadabout Gaddis from The Flying Fisherman,” a tv pioneer fishing host did back again in the 1960’s, Jake and Mac flew from lake to lake to do study for their book. Their quest for information took them to catfish holes in North and South Carolina, Virginia and as far west as the Red River of the North, which flows by way of the city of Grand Forks, North Dakota. This river is not to be confused with the Red River, a tributary of the Mississippi River that varieties component of the border amongst Texas and Oklahoma.

Every person will agree that flying two, four hundred miles in a light aircraft is a long way to go to catch channel catfish. But, the two men attest that the journey, combined with the studying experience, was properly value the time and energy. Jake’s best Red River channel cat tipped the scales at 21.eight pounds and Mac’s largest was not far powering at twenty.4 pounds. Equally fish had been massive for their species, taking into consideration that Jake’s trophy was just shy of the North Carolina state file of 23.four kilos.

Throughout their two days on the river they ended up professionally guided by Brad Durick, a focused angler and skilled of the Red River of the North. A total of forty 3 channel cats ended up landed, the bulk weighing amongst 10 and fourteen lbs.. What made the trip so special, and has each anglers nonetheless conversing, was the kind of bait they utilised. It was not the sucker fish or the golden eyes, (a forage fish), but frogs. Indeed, frogs. A Leopard Frog which is a little amphibian that’s a favored specimen for laboratory studies. It looks that this frog likes the rapidly relocating water of the Red River of the North and thrives on May possibly Flies and other insects. The fact that Leopard Frogs do not create a distasteful secretion, as some do, make them a tasty morsel for massive channel cats and other river predators.

Jake and Mac also chronicled their catfish fishing research from journeys to Santee Cooper, Lake Murray, Monticello, Wylie and Wateree in South Carolina, the James River in Virginia, as properly as, our very own Lake Norman in the e-book. Although some trips saw greater fishing, like the fifty-6 and a half pound blue cat taken by Mac on the James River, none were as intriguing as the North Dakota junket. The two writers are seeking forward to sharing their cat fishing encounters with you when the “Catfish Hunters” comes off the press this winter season.

Upcoming Activities:

Cost-free Fishing Seminar: “Frequently Questioned Concerns about Lake Norman Fishing” – Jake Bussolini and I will reply your fishing concerns on Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at 6:30 p.m. at Gander Mountain, Exit 36, in Mooresville, NC. This session will be of great interest to people new to lake fishing and interested in catching bass, cats, crappie, perch and stripers. Bring your queries to this useful seminar. For added information, contact 704 658 0822.

The Lake Norman Sail &amp Electricity Squadron will conduct Boater Security Teaching on Saturday, September 24, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. at the Duke Vitality Environmental Center, Huntersville. The value is $ forty five.00. Pre-registration is required. For further details, go to: www.usps.org/lakenorman or contact Bob Yannacci at 704 660 5568.

Tips from Gus! To drift fish for cat fish, merely drift in the present and drag the bait together the bottom. This strategy performs nicely and a whole lot of water can be covered in a day’s fishing.

Scorching Spots of the Week: Catch spotted bass on buzz baits early and late off rip-rap and natural rock details. Schoolie bass are on the surface of shallow river details and in excess of underwater humps on windless days. Greatest bets are Reed Creek at the south stop and around the Islands in the river channel around the State Park. Those targeting white perch are obtaining big colleges suspended in water to fifty ft deep. Ideal spots to fish are deep river and secondary points and in and around deep brush. Striper fishing is spotty.

The surface water temperature varies by place, but is primarily in the reduced eighties in open waters not affected by electricity generation. The drinking water stage is about 5. ‘ below entire pond on Lake Norman and two.8’ under total on Mountain Island Lake

Capt. Gus Gustafson of Lake Norman Ventures, Inc. is an Outside Columnist and a entire time Specialist Fishing Guide on Lake Norman, NC. Visit his world wide web web site, www.FishingWithGus.com or get in touch with 704-617-6812.

Hatteras in January questions

Hi there all,

I am from PA and have only fished OBX when, though it was a blast (restrict of bluelines, a handful of mahi, two citation cudas)! I am a normal on the NJ fishing scene. My brother is finding married in March, I remembered my excellent trip, and we now have a boat booked for one/21/twelve for blackfin and perhaps a shot at a BFT.

The captain described that if they don’t cooperate that day, there are a lot of other choices.

What are the other choices? (I’m guessing AJ, tiles, grouper?)
How need to I prep the boys for this trip? (of the 6, only 2 of us have been to the canyons and the rest are inshore men)
What are the greatest possibilities for citations on this journey? (would be an Great souvenir considering that we never have citations up north)

Many thanks for any assist.

LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 7.4 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE SLIGHTLY STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR AND 78 DEGREES

This Lake Lanier Bass report is from Jim Mathley, www.jimboonlanier.com – 770 542-7764

There remain several different patterns working to catch spotted bass, which is normal for this time of year. "Junk Fishing" which is throwing a number of different baits in a number of different types of areas, can actually be a good pattern. The spotted bass have started to school around some creek mouths throughout the lake. Top water baits will work on these fish, but they are hard to catch. There are allot of single fish pushing blue backs to the surface, but they don’t stay up long. Make a perfect cast right in the middle of the action to get strikes. The reward is that there are some very big fish in the mix currently. If you have the patience to wait on them, you can catch them. We have been able to draw them up with top water baits when the sun is high, but in low light conditions, you are better to wait for the blow ups before casting if you hope to catch a larger spotted bass. Alternate between poppers and walking baits to find out which the fish will respond to best. A jerk bait or a Fish Head Spin will work on these fish too but you have to remain patient. This is the best big fish pattern working on the lake this week. When the fish are not as active and relating closer to the bottom use a jig with a twin tail trailer or a Carolina rigged worm will produce strikes. There are also some smaller fish around docks and back in cuts close to the main lake, particularly in rocky areas. These fish can be taken on a jig or worm, but the quality is not as good in most cases. The bridge pilings of all the major bridges are holding bait and fish as well. Work these areas with a fluke, jerk bait or drop shot minnow imitation to draw strikes. See our web site for Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale.

This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of Big Fish On! Guide Service, 404 561 2564. www.bigfishonguide.com

Striper fishing is fair. The full moon coupled with a cold front has had a negative effect on the striper bite. The south end of the lake has been spotty, requiring a considerable amount of searching. The best bite is from 12:00pm to 5:00pm.The exception continues to be the north end of the lake. We have reports of large schools of smaller fish from the mouth of the Chestatee River to Gainesville Creek. Young Deer Creek, Bald Ridge Creek and Shoal Creek are your best bets on the south end. Down rods with live herring is your best technique. Umbrella rigs will also work but be prepared to catch a lot of trees as the lake level drops and most of the fish are holding under the tree top level. Our Lowrance Structure Scan technology has been a huge advantage in seeing the fish in the trees.

WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 10.2 FEET, STAINED & 86 DEGREES BY CHRIS BELL

Bass fishing has been better this week. We are finally experiencing some cooler temperatures which has caused some fish to pull up. The majority of the larger fish are positioned on humps and road beds lake wide, but there are a few fish showing up on shallow points and pockets. For the offshore bite use mid depth crankbaits in a shad pattern as fish begin to reposition on the tops of humps with cooler water temperatures. Crankbaits that are producing are Strike King 5XD, Bomber Fat Free Shad, and Spro Deep Little John in the cell mate color. These same baits can be used on the ends of shallow points to produce fish. When the sun comes up use small finesse worms Texas rigged with a 1/8 ounce weight in green pumpkin. See our web site for the Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale.

Hybrid and striper fishing is good. Fish are schooling on humps first thing in the morning. Use ¼ ounce rattle traps in chrome black back and popping corks with fly. Once the sun is up down line fresh lively shad on these same areas on schools of fish.

Crappie fishing has been poor. Crappie have not pulled up yet but should make a move over the coming weeks. For now continue to focus on bridge columns with live bait and standing timber.

September 16, 2011

LAKE ALLATOONA IS DOWN 7.4 FEET, 78 DEGREES AND CLEAR

This Lake Allatoona bass report is from Matt Driver, www.proanglerradio.com.

Fishing is good. The fish are moving shallow and are getting easier to catch. The top water bite is still good in the morning with the buzz bait and Spro Hydra Pop is still great choices. In the mornings some fish are very shallow so target wood and shallow rock. Something else that is working good is lipless crankbaits like the Spro Aruku shad. Cover lots of water, and mix your retrieves up, but faster is working best. See our web site for the Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale.

This Lake Allatoona striper and hybrid fishing guides report has been brought to you exclusively by Robert Eidson of First Bite Guide Service, 770 827 6282. www.firstbiteguideservice.com Lake Allatoona, Georgia email: eidson6260@comcast.net

Line side fishing is fair. We are still fishing early and late and we use sonar to find our fish. There is still a decent top water bite lasting about 30 minutes at sun up and then again at sun down. Find the fish schooling on top from Kellogg’s Creek up to Bethany Bridge, and use something small to catch them. Use the Rooster Tail, a Fluke Jr. or a Zara Puppy. After the top water bite shuts down you may be able to catch a few down lining to 24 feet over fish you see on your graph and these fish are still very finicky. Top water bite will keep getting better as September is always a good month for top water fish on Allatoona.

September 16, 2011

LAKE HARTWELL IS DOWN 7.5 FEET, CLEAR & 78 DEGREES

Bass fishing is fair to good and the fish are ready to feed. Be sure to find bait schools on the Lowrance as these fish are feeding on the largest schools they can find. The Rattlin Rap in either the natural shad or the black and chrome are working on the spots up in the Tugaloo river. On the river bridges, be sure to work the rip rap early in the morning with both the Rattlin Rap and a #7 silver and black back Shad Rap. Also check out the mouths of any and all major creeks working them well with buzz baits and crankbaits alike. Bass are holding in small pockets right at the mouth of these creeks. See our web site for the Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale. Any lay down timber is a must for a pig and jig in any dark color. Any remaining docks that might still be in the water deserve a look with a jig or Texas rig work.

September 16, 2011

LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 2.7 FEET, CLEAR & 77 DEGREES

Bass fishing is fair and now is a good time to start using the early fall baits. Start the mornings off with a white buzz bait up the rivers on long run out points. Try to locate the widest and biggest one you can find. Make long casts to the shallow water and work the bait all the way back looking for any bass that might follow it. Be sure to work the points using all angles and this will include throwing to deeper water and working it back to shallow water. On the same point, switch to a four inch Husky jerk bait in either a blue and chrome or green and chrome and work the same areas that you just worked with the buzz bait. By mid day the Carolina rig with a Zoom finesse worm in green pumpkin seems to be working best when thrown to the sides of sharp points near deep water. Down size your weight as much as possible and use no more than 12 pound Sufix Elite line. The late afternoon is the best time for throwing those crankbaits. Start after mid afternoon with the #5 or #7 Shad Rap in either fire tiger or natural. Try both colors fish the points and sides of points lake wide.

September 16, 2011

CLARK HILL IS DOWN 7.1 FEET, STAINED & 78 DEGREES

Bass fishing is good Largemouth and the spots are staging up and going into their fall feeding frenzy real soon. Look for the ass to relate heavily to shad schools all day. Most of the fish you will see on the Lowrance will be suspending and they are just looking for an excuse to go on a feeding tear. A great bait to use while fishing the points and surrounding areas for these suspending bass is a Ito Vision 110. This suspending can work all day and use a stop and go action. See our web site for the Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale. In the clear water use the gizzard shad and threadfin shad colors. Try the seven inch Rattle Lightnin’ Worm in the pearl color on the edges of the grass mats that are located on the inside of the points. Work the shallower water with these worms. Use little or no weight at all and a 3/0 or 4/0 Mustad hook for the best results. With this rig watch the line as most of the bites will occur on the fall.

September 16, 2011

LAKE SEMINOLE IS DOWN ONE FOOT, CLEAR AND 85 DEGREES BY MATT BATY

Bass fishing is slow. The bass are still not biting very well, but there has been some good frog action up the flint. Look for matted hydrilla and scattered grass anywhere close to fairly deep water. Fish a Spro Popper in Natural Green or a 3.5" Big Bite Baits Top Toad in Green Pumpkin Pearl. Either bait works well you just need to try both to see what type of mood the fish are in. Another technique that works well right now is to flip main lake grass beds in 7 to 10 feet of water. When flipping use 25 pound Sunline FC Sniper Fluorocarbon because the fish are really line wary this time of year. As for bait selection, well there really is only one lure you need to flip on Seminole, and that is a Big Bite Fighting Frog in black and blue.

September 16, 2011

LAKE GEORGE IS FULL, 81 DEGREES & CLEAR

Bass fishing is fair. Try the deep diving crank bait like a Spro Little John DD and watch for the school to feed. Citrus shad is a good color. Follow up with a Carolina or Texas rig for a couple more bites once the feeding frenzy dies down or if you can’t get them to hit the crank bait. Concentrate on the cover with your soft plastics. For the top water activity use a frog or a popping bait around the grass early in the morning. Late in September, the fish may begin to move up some. See our web site for Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale. The grass bite should pick up, and there may begin to be some schooling activity. Keep a top water tied on and if you see schooling fish around points or at the mouths of creeks sue a Pop R or Rat L Trap will work.

September 16, 2011

LAKE WEISS IS DOWN .68 FEET, LIGHT STAIN & 78 DEGREES BY COLLINS GUIDE SERVICE

Now available for sale 50 of my proven GPS waypoints for off shore structure for Bass and Crappie fishing on Weiss Lake, Alabama. E mail ken@havefunfishing.com

Bass fishing is good and a lot of bass have moved shallow in the coves and bays as the water cools and the Shad migrate shallow. Shallow running crank baits, spinner baits and Rat L Traps in shad patterns are working well. Look for the bite to really get hot when the water gets below 70 degrees.

Striper fishing is poor and they are in fair numbers in Little River and the upper Chattooga River. Little Spring Creek is also producing some fish. The canal and the powerhouse lake are also producing some Stripers. Live Shad is the key to catching these fish, flat lines and down lines fished 8 to feet deep and trolled slowly are producing some fair striper fishing.

Crappie fishing is good and the crappie are mainly under the docks that have at least 8 feet of water under them, look for larger, older docks that create a lot of shade. Use a 1/24 ounce Jiffy Jig in colors JJ13 and JJ17. There are some fish out deep on channel ledges and more will be moving to them as the water level and the water temperature drops over the next few weeks.

September 16, 2011

LAKE OCONEE IS DOWN 3 FEET LOW, 80 DEGREES AND A LIGHT STAIN UP RIVER

Bass fishing is fair. The Bass are still under the docks. You can now add the jig bite to the list of worms that are catching fish. The Texas rigged u-tail Zoom worm in a dark green or blue has been the best over the past few days. The Shakey Head is a close second to the Texas rig. Some fish are also coming on the Booyah pigskin Jig. You will need to fish these rigs as far under the docks as possible. Fish are starting to move into shallower water as it cools down. As always the bite is better when Georgia Power is moving water. See our web site for Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale.

Lake Oconee Line Side report brought to you by Mark Smith at Reel Time Guide Service. 404-803-0741. wwwreeltimeguideservice.com

Line side fishing is fair. As the water cools down start looking for the fish to show up in the river bend area of the lake. Use your Lowrance to locate the schools of bait and look under them for the schools of stripers. When you see the striper under the bait drop a live shad down to them and hang on. This pattern will hold into December. When the birds start showing up. As always keep an eye out for breaking fish and have a popping cork ready to through to them. Any day the u-rig bite at the dam should start back up. I always go check out the dam area at this time of year to see if it is time to pull the rigs. Sugar Creek has the Capt. Mac umbrella rigs in stock along with Okuma line counter reels and Okuma striper rods. They also have a complete line of Zoom baits on hand. If you like to see the Lowrance HDS units in action give me a call and we can show you how it works. You can have an on the water demonstrations at 404-803-0741.

Crappie fishing is fair. As the water cools down these fish will start to move up in the water column. Some fish are showing up in brush piles from 5 to 10 feet. The night bite in the timber is still the best producer. Look for the fish to show up on your Lowrance and drop you live shiners down the depth they are holding.

September 16, 2011

LAKE SINCLAIR IS DOWN 1.3 FEET, 84 DEGREES, MOSTLY STAINED.

Bass fishing is fair to good as the weather cools off. Top water lures and buzz baits are working on sea walls and docks. Also use the Pop R and a large Chug Bug. If the fish miss the bait then use a fluke, a jig or a spinner bait. Try the Mann’s Baby One Minus reeled fast, caught 5 of 6 missed surface strikes. Docks and boat houses are still holding fish that are hitting jigs, soft plastics, and some on crank baits. Primary points and flats along the creek runs and secondary points in coves are beginning to hold fish that are slowly headed farther in. Crank baits or Carolina rigs will catch these structure holding groups of fish out on the river. Depths of these fish are varying from about 6 to 12 feet deep up the lake to 10 to 20 feet deep down the lake. Rip rap continues to hold a few fish, also. Crank baits, lightweight Texas rigs, and jig head and worm rigs are the primary choices to try.

September 16, 2011

JACKSON LAKE IS DOWN 3.9 FEET, STAINED & 79 DEGREES

Bass fishing is good and the spots are starting to feed on bait schools mid lake south. Use the Pop R and the Rico in shad and bream colors. Also use the 3/8 ounce Redemption spinnerbait. A white 1/4 to 3/8 ounce spinnerbait thrown right up at the bank and worked just below the surface will get strikes. Look for wood and rock in the lower lake creek. These areas will hold the largest fish. Shallow points with rock will also hold bass. Work as much water as possible and keep the spinnerbait in the water. Also look at the areas near the dam. The points are famous for putting good quality bass in the well during recent days and use the spinnerbait in white. See our web site for Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale.

Video: 1000 lb giant with 450g Black Hole

Soon after I was introduced to Black Hole ‘Nano Carbon’ rod two years in the past, I’ve witnessed sufficient what the rods can do. Even so, I was extremely impressed when Capt Brad introduced a one thousand lb giant in 1 hour on forty five – 55 lbs drag making use of 5′ Black Hole Cow Special factory rod.
Even so, I had a self-confidence the 450g rod could manage a large because Greg landed a 773 lb large with a 4’8&quot customized 450g Black Hole last yr.

Observe this video clip to see how eleven.eight oz light 450g BH Cape Cod Special shows its strength for one thousand lb large.

Your boat or mine!

For those fishermen that have been waiting to do a little inshore fishing now is the time to go. The spring nor was the summer was a bonus much less a regular catching time. However, since the days are shorter meaning less daylight the fish are going into what I call “panic feeding mode!” So therefore it’s time to decide your boat or mine!

Red fish growing mania has happened

In one of last month’s reports I said “Give it about a month and the red fish clan will put on one heck of a growth spurt!” Well, it has happened inshore fishermen have been catching more red fish in the legal slot limit of 14 to 23 inches tail length than not! The red fish offers up one heck of a fight on light tackle…here’s this deal..you can fight them and keep them or not! Whatever you do don’t forget your dip net or your camera!!

September 13, 2011 Monday 7:30 departure

Captain Ray Crawley of Miss Judy Charter

Robin and Paul Dembkowski Dacula, Georgia

It was beautiful morning as Robin and Paul stepped on to Captain Ray Crawley’s flats boat “No Problem!” This wasn’t the first time that this fishing duo had stepped onboard! They have fished with Captain Ray, if not mistaken; about five times! Well, this day to prove to be one of those keepers for more reasons than one.

While using live shrimp and occasional Captain Ray secret artificial bait Robin and Paul caught trophy as well as keeper red fish and also some nice spotted sea trout. For the last couple of trips Robin beat Paul by catching the biggest red fish. Well, if you check out the two pictures in this report you will find not much has changed “Robin is still winning!” They are scheduled to go later this week with Paul still hoping to get a little revenge! However, unfortunately lady luck just might be on Robin’s side and then there is that way she works her fish, which is just right!!

Crabbing report

Captain Deidra Jeffcoat is holding up a nice Blue Crab! By the way Miss Judy Charters offers crabbing trips too!! It’s fun for all ages!!

I have fishermen call me all of the time and ask about blue crabs. So I thought I would share with you what I tell them. The sloughs in creeks and rivers are great places to target the old blue crab. The best bait is going to be fish heads or chick necks or backs. My most old time favorite crabbing rig is a hand line, sinker, and bait tied on. Drop it down to the bottom, wait until you feel the crab feeding on the bait, and then slowly inch the line in. Crabbing is fun for all ages! Whatever you don’t forget you dip net!!

Artificial Reefs Report

The month of September can be a real fun catching month especially when fishing the artificial reefs areas. In my world I have what I call two sets of artificial reefs to choose from. I have the artificial reefs located in 50 feet or less and those that are in 50 to 60 feet of water.

Artificial reefs located in less than 50 feet of water

Approximately 5 miles off Wassaw Sea Buoy

Fishing in these areas at this time can be a little tricky. Take for instance last week: We bottom fished with small pieces of squid and fish catching a lot of small fish black sea bass. Even when trying larger pieces of cut fish we still only catch the small fish. Since we have had hardly any king or Spanish mackerel movement into our area there weren’t any options to change to. I normally during this time change from bottom fishing to trolling and vice vise when the bite slows for one or the other. However, since we have not had much of a top water bite “no options here!”

I have been saying this all year…it’s not over until it over. The mackerel could still make a last minute showing. All I can do is hope for this to happen!!

Artificial reefs located in 50 to 60 feet of water

Approximately 15 miles off Wassaw Sea Buoy

During this time the bottom fishing is more active, because you are fishing a little deeper water. However, here again “no mackerel” in this area either. The best that I can tell you is this.. just this extra little depth as well as the distance from shore puts a little different twist in regards to the bottom bite. Bottom fish such as black sea bass, banded rudder fish, blue fish, tomtate, and trigger fish have tendency to school up together, because all have found a food source. So there fore it might take a while to locate where this is happening on the reef, because the bait is not every where. So I suggest moving from spot to spot until you find where the bait and the fish are schooling. Then I suggest to do what I call the “stop, drop, wait for a hit, and if not move to the next fishing spot!”

Savannah Snapper Banks

Mixed bag affair offshore this past week

The bottom fishing at the Savannah Snapper Banks proved to be very interesting this past week. With small pieces of squid and live cigar minnows we caught a little of everything from vermilion snapper to trigger fish to blue fish. Here’s a bait combination that really worked we put a small piece of squid and one live cigar minnow on each hook and serious hook ups happened! This became known as the vermilion snapper cocktail…

Sword Fish Bite Is On!

Saturday September 10, 2011 and

Sunday September 11, 2011

Captain Chris of Team X-TRA-SEA emailed me this fabulous sword fish report!

We headed out Saturday morning with Brendin Page, Zack Page, Johnny Gondol, Thomas Bishop, Kent Philips and myself on board to have another go around with sword fishing.

We skipped our usual trolling at the ledge and headed straight to deep water for some daytime dropping in roughly 1,700 feet of water. At these depths we can only fish one line at a time. To get the bait to the bottom we have to use about a 15 pound weight. On the second drop, Brendin hooked up with something big. We strapped him in to the gimbal belt/harness and it was game on. For the first two hours it was a lot of give and take and then Brendin started to make some headway. As the battle ensued Brendin’s hands started cramping up and the next thing we know he started with the dry heaves, which went to just straight throwing up. Keep in mind he was still strapped to the rod and reel with a harness as well as fighting the fish while all of this is going on. I’m glad we have raw water wash down in the boat.

After about 4 hours, not only were his hands cramping but his legs were shaking uncontrollably. Once again he started with the dry heaves. He lost his concentration and let the line slack just for a second and that’s all the fish needed to shake the hook. We all sat in disbelief that the fish was gone just like that. Brendin crumpled to the floor and asked for more water. The fight had taken us 14 miles from where we started and the sun was starting to set. We headed back to the same area to set up for some night fishing.

Things were pretty uneventful so we broke out the grill and cooked up some burgers. Brendin was the first to fall asleep and one by one everyone started to doze off until it was just Johnny and I working the lines. Around midnight I saw one of the rod tips shaking a little bit so I picked it up to check it out. It felt like something was just shaking the line until I felt a steady pull. I set the hook and it was fish on! It didn’t put up a big fight, but Johnny had the gaff at the ready when the fish finally broke the water about 15 feet away. It was thrashing its head around with the bill sticking out of the water. I could see that it was a small swordfish, but Johnny couldn’t quite make out what it was. As I reeled it closer to the boat I told him to get rid of the gaff and just grab his bill. In one motion he pulled the swordfish over the side into the boat. We “high fived” each other and started to hoot and hollering waking everyone else on the boat back up. We took a few pictures, measured it to confirm it was too small to keep, and then revived it before sending it back down into the darkness.

Now everyone was wide awake and ready to go. We had three lines out when Brendin had something grab one of his baits and head straight for the bottom, peeling off probably close to 400 yards before slowing down. Unfortunately it pulled loose soon after. Not even ten minutes after resetting his line Brendin had another fish on. He fought it for about 15 minutes before he got it to the boat. In short order we gaffed the sword, pictures were taken, it was packed it in ice, and we got the lines back out.

About an hour later Brendin shouted out that there was a swordfish jumping near the front of the boat with a glow stick attached to the line. This was a sign for everyone to start reeling so to find out who was hooked up. Thomas came tight with the fish and set the hook. Fish on. After another 15 minute fight we had our second keeper swordfish in the boat. We set up for one last drift before it started getting light. We had one more fish on, but lost him after just a few minutes. Fuel was now becoming an issue so we headed back into the ledge for a little bit of trolling before the long run in. We caught two bonita and lost a decent size “Mahi Mahi” at boat side. Everyone was exhausted so we cleaned up the boat a little and broke out the bean bags. We had two swordfish on ice and released another. Not a bad trip. The ocean was calm so I throttled us up, cranked up the tunes and headed for the hill. No state record again, but we didn’t really care because we had such a great time! And not only that it makes for such a good excuse to go back again!

PS: Captain Chris’s sword fish catching tip for the day: As far as best baits to rig up…Captain Chris says, “I think its more important getting the bait in front of the fish than what the bait is.” The team’s main bait used is whole squid. However, they have used Boston mackerel, Bonita belly, grunts and, etc.

Thanks so much Captain Chris for sending me this sword fish report and the pictures, too! Please keep them coming! Captain Judy

For those of you that use the old fly rod you already know that you can catch just about any kind of fish with this set up! However, there are a few secrets: It’s best to know how to pick out the best flies, present them so that they look, and acts like the real thing. And of course cast into and work areas where there are fish! Which is the most important thing!

Little Miss Judy Believe It or Not!

1930’s Era

General Oglethorpe Hotel, Wilmington Island, Savannah, Georgia

Attachment 204833

This is picture of me (Captain Judy) doing a great balancing act on the stern of my father’s old wooden boat named after my mother “Miss Jerry!” In the background is the General Oglethorpe Hotel better known by the “young-ers” as the Savannah Sheraton Hotel. I went to this site to see some close up old time pictures of this magnificent hotel. http://www.sip.armstrong.edu/Ogletho…le_Img115.html

This hotel has so much history that if I started writing about what I think I know we would be here for a while. Here is what I would like to share with you. My father used to say, “In Las Vega the mafia buried their dead in the desert. On Wilmington Island they buried their dead on the Oglethorpe Hotel golf course in the sand pits!” According to my father digging in the sand was easier and better than disturbing the greens. And my father also said, “Parts of Jimmy Hoffa was buried under the helicopter pad at the hotel. According to my father this wasn’t considered a burial it was a statement!!

As you know my father may or may not have worked with the well known Al Capone gangster association in the 1930’s. Since I wasn’t born until 1951 I really don’t know for a fact. However, here’s what I do know…my father certainly did know a lot about all of these goings on. When he talked about it his eyes would light up and that big cigar that he was smoking produced some of the thickest smoke rings around his head that I have ever seen. And this was his sign that big conversations were going on!! My standard line to those that read this stuff is this: This information has to be true because I’m certainly not smart enough to make it up!

Thanks for reading! Captain Judy
