The trick fish ordeal!
By Captain Jack McGowan
Fall is almost upon us! The autumnal equinox is on Friday September 23rd. A rough definition is when the day and night is approximately equal. As the fall proceeds the days are getting shorter and the nights longer. Changes in light periods as well temperature changes mark the change of season from the heat of summer to cool of fall. Cooler temperatures not only means more comfort but also better fishing as shrimp from the sounds move into the creeks and backwaters.
This year is no exception! Already there have been several of nice catches of sea trout and redfish! Lots of these are legal size. A good rule of thumb is that have to measure the fish (to determine if it is a keeper), then toss it back for another day. Fall is definitely in the air! That said there are lots of bait steelers around: pin fish, yellow tails, croakers, tomtates, pig fish, needle and the like. Until the water temperatures drops considerably bait steelers or as one client called them trick fish will be thick. Bait steelers can mean there is a food going on. Likely if have enough bait or patience you can some nice fish in that area. If trick fish are eating all your bait try pitching a plastic. When pitching for redfish work the edge of grass, a few feet off the grass can mean trick fish. The redfish bite has been pretty good! Fish will usually bite nicely just prior to the front. When front hits it typically takes a few day for things to pick up again. The bite has been good in the sounds, on the inside as well upriver or towards the heads of creeks and rivers. As fall progresses anticipate a better on the inside. For now the bite has been wide spread with some good catches of fish. If you are fishing shrimp take plenty of shrimp because there lots of trick fish out there!
One good indicator of large redfish in the surf are orange butter flies. In recent days orange butter flies can seen while fishing. Those wanting to fish for large stag bass, fall is an excellent time to fish for stag bass! Sea trout fishermen say when you the tassels on the marsh grass its time to fish for sea trout! Tassels are beginning to appear and sea trout are starting to bite! Fishing has been pretty good on the coast and will likely be getting hotter as we head into the fall!
As we head into this week low pressure is holding on the coast with the forecast of improving weather by the weekend. Typically fish with heavy scales bite better during a falling barometer. The thought is these sturdier fish are less susceptible to pressure changes. For those venturing out this week there should be some nice fish to catch!
Hope this of interest and help! Fish On! Capt. Jack McGowan
Sound fishing is fun!!
Atlantic Sharpnose Sharks, 100 Pound Rays, and Trophy Red Fish!!
Clear nose skate! This fish hit a small piece of shrimp and offered up quite a fight while using light tackle. This looks like a stingray, but it different. The reason being is that it doesnt sport that dangerous spike on the tail. However, I still dont suggest handling this fish! We try to get the hook out, but if we cant we just cut the leader. Our hooks are very small and so are the leaders!!

4 hours inshore sound trip on Miss Judy Too Captain Kathy Brown and Captain Judy Helmey with
Gary and Darlene Oakes and Mike and Ann Robb
7:00 AM departure
6:30 AM high tide 1:00 PM Low tide
My regulars Ann and Mike Robb booked my boat for a 4 hour inshore shark fishing trip. Their guests were Darlene and Gary Oakes, which were visiting from Westville, Illinois. The reason I call Ann and Mike My regulars is because they fish with me a lot and I am very thankful for the business. The fact of the matter is while fishing with them I have met some real interesting people from all over. Believe me this is one duo team that understands why its called fishing and not catching! Although we always have fun, sometimes the fish dont comply with our wishes of catching as well as keeping.
However, on Sunday September 25, 2011 at 7:00 AM when Ann, Robb, Darlene, and Gary arrived I felt it just might be one of my lucky fish catching days. After boarding the Miss Judy Too and after the safety speech off we went to catch the fish of the day! There is one thing that I can always say about Ann and Mike and that is its always going to be a good day whether the fish bite or not! Believe me with this kind of attitude big bites and fights can happen! And they did on this particular day!
After getting anchored up in the Old Wassaw Sound shark hole we began baiting hooks and dropping lines. The tide has just started going out and the current werent too bad. However, about one hour into the trip the current was so strong that we had to add sinkers to the light as well as the bigger lines. On these types of trips we normally used light tackle such as small spinner rod/reels as well as open face type set ups. This gives our customers a choice on what type of tackle that they want to use. For bait we take shrimp and any leftover frozen fish from past fishing trips. Today I had some nice local caught headless shrimp, a lady fish, blue fish, and a couple of old whiting. My first goal is to get the light tackle out with hopes of catching some whiting, croaker, or pin fish. For bait I used small pieces of peeled and not peeled shrimp. All on board, got a rod, dropped their baited hooks to the bottom, and waited anxiously for any sort of a hit. While they were fishing I cut up the school blue fish, put half on one shark rod and half on the other. I set one big rod close to the boat and the other rod I set out about 100 feet from the boat.
It took about 15 minutes before the first whiting was hooked up. I quickly removed it from the hook, cut it in half, pulled in the close big rod, re-baited, and put it back out. In less then 10 minutes we had our first big fish on for the morning. Gary was first up so he picked up the rod and after a few minutes reeled in a nice keeper Atlantic Sharpnose.
Captain Kathy Brown of Miss Judy Charter is holding the Atlantic sharpnoses head and Gary Oakes is holding the tail.
After landing the shark all on board went back to catching bait, which in this case is just caught whiting, blue fish, and croakers. As soon as they hooked one up, we would take it off the hook put it right into the live well. By this time the current was really run strong and it was difficult keeping our small and big baits on the bottom. I decided it was time to add more weight. Its a known fact that when the current is running hard most bites will occur close to the bottom. All size fish are forced to the bottom or on the surface to keep from fighting against a strong current. In this case since the current was screaming I would need to keep our big bait on the bottom to get any sort of action. The best news is before the current got to going to fast my fish catching crew caught some nice whiting and croaker. All I had to do was to keep changing the bait out. When the current is running hard any baits from small to large get what I called washed out! This means that the scent value is almost non-existence. So therefore where there is no scent the fish have to run into the bait, which for me isnt a good thing. So therefore I am constantly reeling lines in and changing baits.
The next big hit occurred about 9:30 AM with the reel screaming as almost all of the line was peeled right off. It was Anns turn so we quickly got the fighting belt situated and placed the rod butt in the proper place. While all this was going on the monster fish continued pulling line out at very steady pace. Ann quickly tried to get control, but just reeling in wasnt going to work. So we moved to what I call walking with the fish! This is a great way to get a big fish to change directions and even in some cases cause it to swim back towards the boat. Believe me we definitely needed this fish to swim back towards the boat, because we were quickly running out of line. Ann was down to ¼ spool and even with the drag tighten to almost 30 pounds the monster fish was still taking line. I dared not to tighten the drag any more for fear of pulling the hook. With that being said, Ann started walking with the fish! After about 15 minutes into this intense fish fight I knew we might need to put a fighting vest on Ann. At this time Ann would reel in about 2 feet and the fish then would take 6 feet back. On some occasions she would get back about 20 feet, which made me feel a bunch better about the almost empty spool. While all of this was going on we were trying to get the vest set up properly on Ann. Ann was a real trooper! She listened and was so focused on catching this fish that no wild moves were made, which is nine times out of ten something that looses a fish.
The current was still raging and this big fish was using this to its advantage. After about 35 minutes into the fight we started making some head way meaning taking in more line than the fish was pulling out. Little by little the reel started getting fuller. While all of this was going on we were wiping Anns eyes, face, and arms off, because it was so humid that multiple streams of sweat was rolling down. Ann now was in step with the fish and was making some good reeling head way.
With the water so muddy I told Ann that even when we got to the sinker she probably would not be able to see the fish. The big fish then took another detour back out to way yonder and away from the boat. It swam way out to the starboard side of the boat pulling close to the surface. It was at this time we could identify the big fish on the end of the line. It was a giant ray with a tail that extended out about 8 feet. It was a big one for sure. Just from what I could see I looked to be way over 100 pounds. Mike, Kathy, and I both agree easily over 100 pounds. So a plan was devised to whom would do what.
Walking with the fish
This is a term that I used when we have a big fish on such as a big ray that knows how to use the bottom and the current to its advantage. The first thing is a big fish such as a ray have an unusually large wing span, meaning once completely expand it can put one heck of a drag on a line. Not understanding this usually either breaks the line or pulls the hook right out of the fish. When you cant just reel the fish in by turning the handle or much less set the drag tight enough its time to go walking with the fish! The first thing that I try to do is to make sure that the angler is comfortable with the way they are standing as well as holding the rod. Then I tell them to back up on the deck slowly putting more pressure on the line. When the drag starting peeling out again I say stop and then walk forward back toward the fish. Once in this mode I suggest reeling while walking forward. All of this has to be done without offering any slack sometimes referred to as Bagging in the line.
I have noticed when an angler can walk with the fish it seems to help their confidence in regards to actually landing the fish. I feel there is nothing worst for a fishermen than the not knowing actually what is going on. It seems when they move with the fish they get more in touch. While the walking is occurring I am explaining exactly what the fish is doing, which also help to fishermen to get in touch with the connection between them, the line, and the fish! Believe me on this particular day, the more Ann became aware the better she felt about the possibilities of landing her fish!!
Once Ann got the fish back close to the boat for about the sixth time I had a feeling that the fight would soon be over. The fish was wearing a bit meaning leaning in more than away from the pressure delivered by Anns now grand ability to control the fish better. Boy, by the time Ann got the ray to the boat she was in full control. Once she got the leader to the boat I grabbed it lightly letting it run through my finger. Oops I forgot to say, I had my thick fishing gloves on! When targeting larger fish I used a lot of cable and if you are not careful it will cut you easily.
Right before I knew it was going to be time to get the hook out of this big 100 pound plus ray I asked Mike, if he didnt mind working the bolt cutters? With the quick answer of yes still hanging in the air he grabbed a pair of gloves, the bolt cutters and got into position. Instead of trying to cut or pull the hook out we take a large pair of bolt cutters and cut the hooks shank. This way the hook can easily fall or work its way out causing the least amount of pressure to the fish. Mike and I leader-ed the ray to the surface and he handed it off to me. Mike then grabbed the bolt cutters and snapped the hooks shank right in half allowing the ray to swim off as if nothing had happened! Now all there was left was to hug, throw up some high fives, congratulate big time, and then there was this other thing. That thing was to figure out how to disconnect Ann from the harness that she wore so well!!
This was Darlenes first fish. She called it cute! Believe it or not but this size whiting makes for good trophy red fish bait!
After getting the boat back into order I re-set the large lines out using live tail less whiting as bait. I know you must be scratching your head on that one!! Its the simplest and most attention getting bait that there is. You take a live whiting and cut the tail section off. Believe me a fish can live without its tail at least until another fish eats it. Once I got the line set I asked, Who is up if we are lucky enough to get another big fish hooked up? All onboard said, It was Darlenes turn! With that being said, we all sat and leaned around the back of the boat. After about 10 minutes into the waiting mode I watched as the big rod look as thought something was messing with it. I picked it up while turning the noise maker to the off mode. (reel clicker) I free spooled a bit letting the fish get a better hold on the bait. As soon as I felt a strong solid pull I yelled fish on! We scurried trying to get the fight belt adjusted on Darlene. While getting it set up Darlene never missed a beat. She reeled rock steady! I grabbed my gloves, because I knew it wasnt going to take her long to get this fish to the boat. It made a few runs taking line off the reel, but Darlene managed good control and got her line back quickly. Once I saw the leader surface I grabbed it and pulled on it. To my amazement Darlene had on a big trophy red fish, which changed everything and quick. I quickly loosen the drag a bit allowing the fish to swim head on in the current while giving me time to grab the big net. While doing this I knew I had to get the tagging kit out and be ready to set the tag. The reason being is once the fish is removed from the water the time clock starts ticking! In fast time we tagged, measured, took pictures, and released a health trophy red fish back to the wild!
Darlene Oakes while fishing on Miss Judy Too tags a 40 red fish
Captain Judy and Darlene Oakes look on as Mike Robb is just about to set her fish back into the wild. Darlene caught it caught, fought, tagged it, and released it! It was a day that none of us will soon forget!
The bottom line to this story is this
When there is a plan to go fishing you really never know what you might catch and where! In this case Ann/Mike Robb, Darlene/Gary Oakes, Captain Kathy Brown, and Captain Judy when leaving the dock for a short four hour trip in the sound didnt have a clue on how the trip would end. However, heres what all of them did know They were going to go fishing and they were going to have a good time no matter what!! And this is just exactly what they did! Thanks again for all the continued support! Captain Judy
Artificial Reefs Report
Artificial Reefs Report The bottom bite is getting better!
I saw a few Spanish mackerel schooling on the surface this pass week! Who knows they might show up after all…
With water temperature falling fishing should be moving about more. The reason being is so are the baits that they eat! With that being said, Pick an artificial reef to fish and stick with it until you find the bite!
Savannah Snapper Banks Report
The bottom bite is a whole bunch better! In some case just drop your hook and catch fish!
Vermilion snapper and black sea bass are doing a great job of decorating this cooler with some real good color! Back in the old days when it was legal to keep genuine red snapper this was always the question asked on the marine radio, Got any color in the box?
Savanna Snapper Banks is a good place to fish especially at this time of the year!
The bottom fishing continues to get better as the water temperature falls a few degrees. Believe me even if it goes back up a bit, its not going to matter, because fall is in the air and the fish are aware!
I have had a few reports that there were a few king mackerel caught while trolling and live lining around the naval towers. Just the fact that I am hearing about king mackerel at all is a good thing. The reason being is that our 2011 mackerel season including both kings and Spanish has not taken place, but there is always hope.
I always used to say, When you start seeing the yellow butterflies, its time to fish for king mackerel. Its true and it has been confirmed that the yellow butterflies and the king mackerel do have something in common, which is that migrate at the same time. Well, the yellow butterflies did migrate, but as of yet the kings have not at least through this area!

Blue water fish are on the move and so is the water that they are swimming in. Its that time of year where ledges located in 150 foot plus as well as wrecks or man made reefs hold the attention of lot of different kinds of baits. The old saying of where you got fish you got fish is still true today. Where you have small fish you most likely got larger fish! Its time to do a little strolling and trolling at the Gulf Stream!

Little Miss Judys Believe It or not Story!
The planning that took place before, after, and during the time the liquor was loaded into the trucks
Boy, if this loading ramp could talk. This is where daddy worked on his customers cars and trucks. According to him this invention in his shop helped out a lot. Mechanics could work on the vehicles while standing up. This was way before lifts just picked the cars up so that the mechanics could walk under them to do their work. The person in the right hand corner of this picture is Charles Eden whom worked on and off with my father for many years. This picture was found tucked in my baby book with this top portion cut out. I wish I knew what was cut out of the picture!
According to the stories told to me when it came to the supposedly illegal transportation of liquor my father was involved from the ocean to the lands that butted up to it!
If you have been keeping up with my Little Miss Judys Believe It or Not Stories you most likely already know that my father was a Colorful Coastal Character for sure! I will try to sum up how he got this title. My father was married 8 times and never stopped dating. He allegedly worked for Big Al Capone as well as spent time with Fidel Castro. According to his story he had lunch with him at the downtown Desoto Hotel. He was man of many means, he could fix anything that had to do with cars and could just about get out of any situation that he was in. My father was the type that knew what to say and when! He always dressed like a millionaire, smoked a big cigar, carried a big roll of money, and drove loud colored cars with profound fins. My father was always held the attentions of beautiful women especially those with a very spirited side. If there was an ideal that he needed to come up with this would end up being called his specialty. For instance: If there was a big crowd in the bar and he needed to get through quick all he would say, Wet paint coming through! And according to my father with that being said the crowds parted!
Once the cases of liquor were unloaded from the boats into the secret room located in Greens the cars and trucks were then loaded.
Heres what was taken care of before the transporting of the liquor began
According to my father those involved would be notified and then they would tell those that needed to know. Persons involved were to notify their contacts at the police department so that heads could be turned! Believe me according to my father a lot of people were involved in this movement. Those on the force not involved were not on duty or sent to cover other areas of town.
Now heres where my father came in He modified the cars and trucks either furnished by Big Al or the ones that he picked up. Daddy then beefed up the vehicle support system so that they didnt look unusually loaded. Then it was decided to put white marks on the tires so that those not looking could turn their heads easier. According to my father those policemen that werent on the payroll normally sent those that werent to other areas of town to police. The routes run from the Island to the inland were set in stone. At least until something happened. Back in these days, according to my father there were so many involved that it kinds of made things run a whole lot smoother.
Wrecker service on call!!
All wreckers services involved would be on stand by so as to keep the convoy moving. My father said one time that a car broke down; the wrecker just hooked it up, and kept moving to the destination point. From the way my father explained it to me it was lots of fun to be involved and really not dangerous at all. However, since I was a child and my father hadnt gotten hurt, shot at and hit, or been put in jail the stories were told of a lighter persuasion.

Dock Fishing
10-two-eleven
Wherever is the very best spot to bass fish on Lake Norman? Thats a quite great problem and a single usually asked by individuals new to the region. Some believe fishing is greater over the 150 Bridge, and other folks choose the scorching h2o discharge channels at each electrical power plants. The checklist goes on. But, arguably the most regular yr round location to cast for bass is below and all around docks. And, Lake Norman has much more than its share. If simple fact, it has so numerous that anglers discover it a overwhelming task to fish all of the fifteen thousand-additionally docks that dot the shoreline.
Even though there are enough docks, no two are the exact same, and bass prevent numerous of them. Savvy anglers make a listing of docks they fish when circumstances and timing are proper. They know that some docks maintain bass when the h2o ranges are higher, even though other people bite far better throughout low water. Furthermore, some are better in the mornings than in the afternoons and some at diverse seasons of the year. So, how does 1 type by way of the maze?
Begin by grouping boat docks into categories, these kinds of as deep/shallow h2o, Spring/Summer/Fall & Winter season, floating or fixed floatation, early morning, afternoon or night time, outdated or new, and people with submerged brush piles. As fish are becoming caught from numerous dock kinds, make mental or written notes, and search out equivalent structures to establish if you have discovered a pattern.
Older docks look to harbor far more fish than more recent ones, perhaps since above time, the owners have put Christmas trees or other woody particles nearby. If you have trouble locating docks with sunken brush or other fish habitat, look for rod holders, fishing poles, cleaning stations and brilliant lights aimed to shine into the drinking water at evening. These are lifeless giveaways that there are sunken objects in casting distance.
Astute bass anglers recognize the type of floatation. If its black, it will take in far more heat and make the surrounding h2o warmer than the lighter colored Styrofoam type flotation. That is a great factor during the cooler months and not so good in the summer season.
Wood ladders, methods, pilings and cross boards provide bass places to suspend and conceal whilst waiting to ambush their subsequent meal. Floating docks are often less desirable considering that they have less objects protruding into the drinking water, and bass have a tendency to lie farther again in which it is more difficult to cast to them.
Forthcoming Occasions:
A cost-free secure boating class about How to Navigate Norman when the Lake is Low¸ will be held at North Level Watersports, 112 Doolie Street, Mooresville, NC 28117 on Wednesday, October twelve, 2011 from 6:thirty p.m. – eight:00 p.m. Topics for dialogue will incorporate Understanding Lake Normans Channel Marker and Buoy System, Identifying and Learning How to Steer clear of the Ten Most Hazardous Spots, and Safely Navigating In Low H2o Circumstances. For far more data, get in touch with me @ 704-617-6812 or e mail Gus@LakeNoman.com.
Suggestions from Capt. Gus:
Use a # 4 or #two J-hook when dock or pier fishing with evening crawlers or red wigglers. The hook is massive sufficient to snare big bass and blue catfish, but little enough to hook sunfish, perch and channel cats.
The Sizzling Spot of the Week:
Bass are surface feeding in the south very hot hole and on river and secondary points during the day. Crank baits and shaky head jigs create limits when fished on humps and brush. Perch fishing continues to be very good to extremely excellent when drifting tiny minnows or vertically jigging Sabiki jigs. Striper fishing is slow, but the ideal wager is to check out the primary river channel above the Lake Norman State Park.
The lake level on Lake Norman is about four.six ‘ below complete pond, and down 2.
7 on Mountain Island Lake. The h2o surface temperature on the two lakes is in the mid to higher seventies.

Today was wonderful and sunny. The winds had been out of the south at 10-fifteen mph and temperatures in the very low 80′s. Cape Point has a lot of bluefish and a couple of spanish early this morning and this afternoon. I did listen to of one huge drum caught this morning at the cape. The Frisco seashore was a minor slow right now. Only a few bluefish caught. Down at Hatteras Inlet there have been some bluefish and number of pup drum caught. Offshore fishing has been pretty good. Good wahoo and dolphin fishing these days.

I talked with a few of trusted neighborhood anglers about the U.S. Open up. They instructed me a couple of kings had been caught at the 90’s and Youpon Reef. The dimensions and amount was nothing at all to publish property about. But as Rube stated, the dimensions of the winning fish isn’t really important since it is even bigger than the 2nd location fish.
Excellent luck to the fishing groups on Saturday. Stay protected.

Brilliant day on the drinking water nowadays.Rob,Pam and grandson Owen from Ohio in the a.m and Ray and Holden from Cary in the p.m. The fish bit all day with the exception of the serious large tide. As shortly as the drinking water began relocating again so did the bite. We discovered some good flounder in Tubbs this early morning and Shallotte River this afternoon. The redfish nevertheless are in enjoy with the Huge dwell shrimp when you can find them.

Steve and Jim lastly got on the drinking water with me today. We attempted to battle the rain on Tuesday, but the electrical energy was just also a lot. We rescheduled for right now. The present was ripping. wind blowing, and water stirred up from the two forces. Once again, the circumstances pushed us to option plans. I actually desired to get out on the seashore and nearshore wrecks to uncover flounder and the big reds. The ocean wasn’t heading to let that today. We ended up hitting the docks landing 12 reds, three grouper, and monster toadfish! The bite looks to have slowed a bit with the water temperatures soaring in close proximity to eighty degrees again. An approaching cold front should alter these circumstances and get the fish biting once again early following week. Many thanks for fishing with us! See ya on the drinking water!

Nothing very good to report from our charter boats nowadays. Fished at Yaupon and it was tough. No action. SW wind tomorrow will be difficult. Very best bets will be to get out to 60 ft and anchor/chum/kite fish or fish along beach on the north aspect of Frying Pan Shoals in which you get land protection from a west/southwest wind. Other choice will be down toward Myrtle close to Apache Pier as also some land safety there. Most likely the video game will be about Saturday fishing as as soon as the front arrives thru wind will be tough out of the north, and circumstances alongside our Brunswick County seashores will be flat close to the land. Hopefully the SW wind won’t stir the seaside drinking water up too bad. If heritage implies something, they really should bite Saturday on the north wind from river channel to Yaupon/Ocean Crest. Very good luck to everyone fishing. Plenty of pogies along the seashore.

LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 8.62 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE SLIGHTLY STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR AND 75 DEGREES. THE UPPER LAKE IS TURNING OVER.
This Lake Lanier Bass report is from Jim Mathley, www.jimboonlanier.com 770 542-7764
Bass fishing is good. The fish are biting very well and the conditions have been nearly perfect in terms of temperatures and wind. We have been focusing on the lower lake as the upper lake is turning over and the bite has not been as good up north, especially for the bigger spots. The spotted bass in the lower lake continue to school heavily around creek mouths as well as over the river channels and standing timber near both long running steep points, and humps. Topwater baits, swim baits, flukes and a Fish Head Spin will catch these schooling fish. Focus on points and humps in the mouths of creeks and work your baits over brush or rocky areas where the fish are schooling. When the sun is out, the fish will relate more strongly to the brush. This is the best case scenario as when the fish are in the brush they are easier to target. When the weather is cloudy the fish tend to roam and sometimes become bottom locked. In addition to the schooling fish there are some good 2 to 3 pound fish available on rocky secondary points in cuts off the main lake as well as in the mouths of the major creeks. There are also some fish around docks and back in cuts close to the main lake, particularly in rocky areas. These fish can be taken on a jig or worm, but the quality is not as good in most cases. With a cold front coming this weekend the fish may become less active and therefore less willing to chase moving baits. If this is the case, slow down and fish a jig or worm in these areas. A drop shot rig has also produced fish in these situations. Be flexible on the water and experiment with different presentations. The fish are in and will remain in your favorite creek mouth areas until the water dips into the 60’s. Have Fun Fishing! See our web site for Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale.
This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of Big Fish On! Guide Service, 404 561 2564. www.bigfishonguide.com
Striper fishing is fair. Not much has changed this week. The lake has started to "turn over" and the fish have moved from the deep water pattern to points and humps. Stick to points and humps 30 to 50 feet deep. The stripers are "glued" to the bottom and will bite but you have to get down to them. The Umbrella rig is a great tool but as the lake continues to fall it is getting very difficult to get down to the fish as the trees and brush are closer to the surface and you can spend a lot of time retrieving your umbrella rig. When you mark fish you can use herring on down rods to reach the fish on the bottom. There is an early top water bite on points and humps. Both spots and stripers are on points and will hit a Red Fin and a bucktail early. Put out a free lined herring while casting and this will get a few extra bites. The bottom line is 30 to 50 feet deep on points and humps is the key. Top water, free lines, down rods and umbrella rigs are all good techniques. The mouth of Young Deer Creek, Bald Ridge Creek and Shoal Creek continue to be good places to start. Stripers have been surfacing midday at the dam but they are not staying up for a long period of time and are difficult to get to. We have also had some reports of fish in Flat Creek at Mountain View and the points in Flat Creek. Chestatee Bay and points north will get hot as the water completes the turnover process and the fish start moving north. All Georgia lake levels are from www.lakelevels.info/?StateID=GA

WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 9.04 FEET, STAINED & 83 DEGREES BY CHRIS BELL
Bass fishing is good. Fish are beginning to concentrate themselves near shallow cover lake wide. A few more cool nights and the lake should really turn on. Continue to cover water with shallow crankbaits until you approach cover such as a lay down or brush pile. The best crank bait has been Bandit 200 series in a shad pattern of any type. The water is really clear right now so matching the hatch is crucial right now. Once you approach cover switch to a shaky head rigged with a Zoom green pumpkin finesse worm. This little worm can truly catch big fish that have been pressured. Over the next few weeks we look to see spinnerbaits and topwater come into play with cooler temperatures as these are two patterns that you can begin experimenting with now as the patterns begin to transition into fall.
Hybrid and striper fishing is good. Fish are schooling on humps first thing in the morning. Use ¼ ounce rattle traps in chrome black back and popping corks with fly. Once the sun is up, down line live shad on these same areas on schools of fish. In a few more weeks as we get come cooler temperatures the schooling action should be lake wide and more consistent.
Crappie fishing has been poor. It is going to be a few more weeks before crappie fishing picks up. Fishing at night underneath a floating light seems to be the best pattern. Down line live minnows in eight to ten feet of water beneath lights near bridge columns. The best bridges have been the 109 and Yellow Jacket bridges. All Georgia lake levels are from www.lakelevels.info/?StateID=GA
September 29, 2011
LAKE ALLATOONA IS DOWN 7.2 FEET, 77 DEGREES AND CLEAR
Fishing is good and can be great if you are in the right place at the right time. With the recent rain and cooler temperatures the schooling spots are getting fired up. The size is not great but they are fun to catch. The Scrounger tipped with a 4inch big bite jerk minnow, and a the smaller version of the Spro McStick jerk bait are great baits to get these schoolers in the boat. Throw past the school and bring the bait right through the middle of the school. Also turn off your electronics and stay off the trolling motor as much as possible so not to spook the fish. Shallow cranking is good also. See our web site for the Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale.
This Lake Allatoona striper and hybrid fishing guides report has been brought to you exclusively by Robert Eidson of First Bite Guide Service, 770 827 6282. www.firstbiteguideservice.com Lake Allatoona, Georgia email: eidson6260@comcast.net
Line side fishing good and the fish are on the move. The fish will eat when you find them. Live bait is starting to work well but the spoon bite is the best bite going right now. The south end of the lake is still the place to be anywhere from clear Creek to the Allatoona Creek arm. Troll these areas with your Mack Farr umbrella rigs. As soon as you find one of these mega schools, drop live bait down to them or use a 1 ounce spoon. The top water bite has down this weeks compare to last weeks, but should pick back up with the cooler weather we are expecting this weekend. Look for these fish on top early morning and late afternoon. Most of the top water action we have seen this week has been within sight site of the dam. Georgia lake levels are from www.lakelevels.info/?StateID=GA
September 29, 2011
LAKE HARTWELL IS DOWN 7.1 FEET, CLEAR & 77 DEGREES
Bass Fishing is good. Flukes and Pop Rs along with the smaller Sammy will work as the bass become more active. Also run the regular twin blade spinner baits and crank baits right up on the banks. As the bass become more aggressive cover a lot of water and find the active fish. Start off on the main lake points and fish any cut or bowls near these points along the bank. Look for a good combination of wood and rock along these areas. Shad are really bunching up and finding a school of these will give you a big advantage. The Bass Fishing Lake Hartwell guide is for sale. Lake levels are from www.lakelevels.info/?StateID=GA
September 29, 2011
CLARKS HILL IS DOWN 7.5 FEET, 75 DEGREES WITH MOSTLY CLEAR
Bass fishing is good and be ready to rig up a variety of sizes and colors of Rattlin’ Raps, a lipless crank bait on ten pound test line and fish the islands, points and the edges of the drop offs. Up in the rivers and creeks where the water will show you a little bit of color, use the darker colors. Don’t forget to fish the Rip Rap with the RNR’s and DT Flat baits. Covering a lot of water might be necessary to bag a good limit. Many of the bass will be small so keep fishing. Use a green pumpkin lizard on a light Texas rig and peg the sinker. Fish the ditches and drop offs. Fishing an area thoroughly will be a must this week. The Fluke bite is picking up and these are smaller bass but there is a big fish somewhere close by so make a lot of casts. Georgia lake levels are from www.lakelevels.info/?StateID=GA
September 29, 2011
LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 2.6 FEET, CLEAR & 75 DEGREES
Bass fishing is good. There is a cold front on the way and this will get the bass active. When the weather changes this time of the year, a cold front usually pushes the bass to the bottom and tight to cover or suspending out in the channels. Use the Rapala DT10 or DT14 for the suspended bass and a tube jig for those hard to find fish. If the bass back off the shallow water and you find them on your graph suspending out in the deeper water, take the DT baits and crank them along these channels. By mid afternoon go to the Carolina rig along with the crank bait and switch back and forth on all areas. Also fish any stump or piece of wood you can find. Work the lay downs and especially those with the larger tops that lay in the deeper water. Most of the reports on the large spotted bass are coming from around the dam and the Shad Rap is best. Lake levels are from www.lakelevels.info/?StateID=GA. See our web site for Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale.
September 29, 2011
CLARK HILL IS DOWN 7.5 FEET, STAINED & 77 DEGREES
Bass fishing is good and the crank bait bite is good on a Rattlin Rap in the red fire crawdad and the red crawdad colors. Try to find isolated areas with small fist size rock on them. Throw in shallow and crank these baits back out to the boat. Some of the bass are following these RNR’s back out to deeper water before they strike. Try the Thunder Stick and the Ito 110 in the mouths of the smaller coves especially the ones that have water in the 15 feet deep at the mouth. Work the wood and the small cuts or bowls starting at the mouth and work your way back. When you get to the back of the coves, try a Skitter Prop in a silver or shad color. A slow retrieve like the one you would use with a buzz bait is all that is needed. Try a prop bait also like the Devils Horse in the backs of the creeks and coves. Some shallow bass cannot resist this slow moving bait. Any wind means a large Super Spook in the bone or even a 7 inch shad Red Fin. All Georgia lake levels are from www.lakelevels.info/?StateID=GA
September 29, 2011
LAKE SEMINOLE IS DOWN ONE FOOT, CLEAR AND 82 DEGREES
Bass fishing is slow. The bass are just not biting on Seminole right now. Very few anglers have reported any good catches lately. There are a couple of techniques that will still work even though the bite is tough. One technique is to fish a floating jerkbait on grass lines on the main part of the lake. The best grass lines are the ones that have shad, bream, or needle fish present. Use the Spro McStick 110 in Old Glory color, but you can do a couple of things to the bait to trick it out a bit. The bait suspends as it is coming out of the package, but if you change the hooks and split rings to a smaller size, it will float slowly back to the surface when fished. We change the hooks to the Gamakatsu #6 EWG treble hooks and the split rings to a smaller and thinner size to give the jerkbait less weight. This makes it more appealing to late summer/early fall bass on Seminole. Use14 pound Sunline FC Sniper Fluorocarbon with the McStick in order to get the best action out of the bait. Another good pattern that is working this year is to flip hydrilla lines in 10 to 15 feet of water. When flipping use 22 pound Sunline Shooter Fluorocarbon, a 1 1/2 ounce Tungsten sinker and a Gamakatsu Heavy Cover flipping hook in 3/0 and a 4" Big Bite Baits Fighting Frog in Vegas Flash. All Georgia lake levels are from www.lakelevels.info/?StateID=GA
September 29, 2011
LAKE GEORGE IS DOWN 1.96 FEET, 79 DEGREES & CLEAR
Bass fishing is good and the weather is about to change and get the fish very active. Bass are up shallow on main lake flats and in the creeks. There are a lot of fish being caught on white Picasso spinnerbaits and a sexy shad Stanford Lures on main lake flats around hydrilla. To find these flats, look for the hydrilla that has matted up on the surface and blind cast all around the flat to find the other clumps that are submerged. Try the frog at the mouths of creeks with deep water close by. Fish a Spro Bonzeye frog in natural red or black back in the pads and work it all the way back to the boat slow. There are usually a lot of fish spread out in the pads this week. Some of the bites will be as far back as you can throw the lure in the pads and some are coming once you get it almost to the boat. Most of the big fish will be caught swimming a white Picasso jig or flipping a Big Bite Baits black and blue Yomama. Locate the fish swimming the jig around any shallow cover that you come in contact with and then slow down and flip the Yomama around the cover to pick up the fish that wont commit to the jig. There is also some good schooling activity throughout the day. Always have a Spro Dwag 100, Zara Spook or a white Big Bite Baits jerk minnow tied to be ready in case they pop up and this can happen anytime of the day. See our web site for Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale. Georgia lake levels are from www.lakelevels.info/?StateID=GA

LAKE WEISS IS DOWN 1.15 FEET, LIGHT STAIN & 73 DEGREES BY COLLINS GUIDE SERVICE
Now available for sale 50 of my proven GPS waypoints for off shore structure for Bass and Crappie fishing on Weiss Lake, Alabama. E mail ken@havefunfishing.com
Bass fishing is good and a lot of bass have moved shallow in the coves and bays as the water cools and the shad migrate shallow. Shallow running crank baits, spinner baits and Rat L Traps in shad patterns are working well. Look for the bite to really get hot when the water gets below 70 degrees. Some good Bass are showing up on secondary points also.
Crappie fishing is good and the crappie are mainly under the docks that have at least 8 feet of water under them, look for larger, older docks that create a lot of shade. Use a 1/24 ounce jiffy jig in colors JJ13 and JJ17. A lot of crappie are starting to show up on the old river channel ledges, spider rigging with minnows is starting to produce some good fish with a ton of under size fish.
Striper fishing is poor and they are in fair numbers in Little River and the upper Chattooga River. Little Spring creek is also producing some fish. The canal and the powerhouse lake are also producing some Stripers. Live Shad is the key to catching these fish, flat lines and down lines fished 8 to 10 feet deep and trolled slowly are producing some fair striper fishing. All Georgia lake levels are from www.lakelevels.info/?StateID=GA
September 29, 2011
LAKE OCONEE IS DOWN 1.86 FEET, 78 DEGREES AND A LIGHT STAIN UP RIVER
Bass fishing is fair. Start the day with a white and chartreuse buzz bait on the sea wall and around the docks in the center of the large creeks and coves. Have a backup rod rigged with a Zoom white fluke for the fish that miss the buzz bait. This pattern will just get better as the water cools. After the sun comes up move under the docks with a shakey head worm, the Zoom watermelon seed or a green pumpkin have been the best colors. Georgia Power has been pumping water out in the afternoon over the past week and this is a good time to work a crank bait on the rip rap on the bridges all over the lake. See our web site for Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale.
Lake Oconee Line Side report brought to you by Mark Smith at Reel Time Guide Service. 404-803-0741. wwwreeltimeguideservice.com
Line side fishing is fair. Over the past week the stripers have shown up in the mouth of Lick Creek. These fish are in the top of the standing timber that is 10 to 15 ft under the surface. Use your Lowrance to locate the schools and have a live bait ready to drop down to them. The top water bite is starting to show signs of starting up. You can see small schools chasing shad in the same Lick Creek area. The fish are not staying up long so have your top water plug ready. This pattern will also improve as the water cools down for the fall. Sugar Creek has the Capt. Mac umbrella rigs in stock along with Okuma line counter reels and Okuma striper rods. They also have a complete line of Zoom baits on hand. If you would like to see the Lowrance HDS units in action and we can show you how it works. You can have an on the water demo. 404-803-0741
Crappie fishing is good. As the water temp drops into the lower 70 the spider rig bite will start to pick up. Right now the fish are showing up in the mouths of the creeks. Some fish are showing up in brush piles from 5 to 10 feet. Look for the fish to show up on your Lowrance and drop you live shiners down the depth they are holding at. Lake levels are from www.lakelevels.info/?StateID=GA
September 29, 2011
LAKE SINCLAIR IS DOWN 1.8 FEET, 78 DEGREES, MOSTLY STAINED.
Bass fishing is good and as the water starts to cool, the bass will move looking for food. Use the buzz baits, spinner baits and the Skitter Walks early on any grass lines. Spinner baits and Rapala’s DT10s along with #5 Shad Raps will work on the main lake wind blow points. Also work the docks with the 1/4 to 3/8 ounce jigs and Zoom U tail worms. Up in the creeks after the sun is high and fish any wood with rocks close by. If you run up on any off colored water use the Manns mid range crank baits with some green and white as well as the Rapala DT10 hot mustard. Fish any rip rap as bass like to run the rocks looking for shad and small bream at all times during the day. See our web site for Rods, Reels and Lures for Bass DVD on sale. Lake levels are from www.lakelevels.info/?StateID=GA
September 29, 2011
JACKSON LAKE IS FULL, CLEARING, 79 DEGREES
Bass fishing is fair and the lake is cooling some. Mid lake fish the steeper banks with jigs and slow moving dark colored Zoom U tail worms. White spinnerbaits are catching a few when thrown right up next to the bank and slow rolling it back. With real muddy water up in the rivers, spinnerbaits and Rat L Traps thrown real close to deep water banks and utilizing a slow retrieve will be a good choice. Black or any dark color jigs worked close to cover is also producing a few good bites. Most of the bass are spots and small. Stay with the jig and work heavy cover in shallow water slow and thoroughly. Anglers may need to make several casts before the bass strike. Add a little scent every 6-10 casts. This always seems to work better in the heavy stained water.
