Fishing REPORT

Frisco Rod and Gun fishing report 2-20

Fishing Report 2/15
A little windy and cool. The winds were from the north east at 10-20 mph and highs in the mid to upper 40’s. It’s been rough surf fishing this winter. I have nothing to report. No boats offshore today, very rough.

fishing Report 2/16
What a nice day. Sunny skies, light south east winds and highs in the mid to upper 50’s. No fish from the surf, but the weather is looking nice for the next few days. Offshore the bluefin tuna action was really good. A few blackfins caught too.

Fishing Report 2/18
What a warm day. Highs were in the low 60’s with mostly sunny skies and southwest winds 15-18 mph. No reports from the beach today, but I’m sure the puppy drum are still around with the warmer temps. Offshore fishing is still really good. Nice bluefins being caught, some over the 73 in limit. Those fish are in the 250 lb range and up

Fishing Report 2/19
Another warm sunny day. West winds 10-15 mph and highs in the low 60’s. Only some dogsharks from the surf. Offshore the bluefin action continues to be really good.

Capt Joe Shutes Bait and Tackle report, Atlantic Beach 2-17

02-17-2011: Finally we are getting some warmer and drier weather. With the continued warming of the water we should be seeing the red drum bite start to pick up back in the marshes. A better chance of finding some red drum along the beaches ans along the Cape Lookout shaols. There are a few black drum along the beaches and back in the sound as well. The North Carolina Marine Fisheries commission has made a new ruling of Speckled Trout. The recreational closure for speckled trout will stay in effect until June 15th, while allowing a 50 lb by-catch in the commercial fisheries or 10% of total catch up to 50 lbs. Trawling for stripers will continue until the remainder of the quota is caught up this season. Mark February 19th on your calender if you would like to either learn how to cast a fly rod or even improve your fly casting. Cape Lookout Fly Fishers is holding a casting clinic on February 19th at the Morehead City Parks and Recreation building on Bridges street in Morehead City from 10 am to 1 pm. If you are a member it is free. If you are not a member the cost is only $ 5.00. There will be a drawing for a TFO fly rod and reel at the end of the casting clinic. This event is for the beginner, novice or experienced caster Last years event had over 100 people show up. There will be a large number of instructors to help you out with your casting. Kids, moms and dads come by for a fun time and learn how to cast a fly rod.

Second Stop of National Guard FLW College Southeast Division on Guntersville

GUNTERSVILLE, Ala. (Feb. 16, 2011) – National Guard FLW College Fishing is headed to Lake Guntersville Feb. 26 for the second of four stops in the Southeast Division. Forty college teams will be competing for a top award of $ 10,000 to be split between the school and bass fishing club; $ 7,500 for bass club and $ 2,500 for their school.

National Guard pro Justin Lucas said the cold winter killed a good amount of Lake Guntersville’s grass, so finding the grass that’s left will be the key to the tournament.

“The College Fishing competitors are going to have to find the healthy grass,” said Lucas, who is from Guntersville. “They can fish only in the south end of the lake, so they’re going to have to find one or two key patches of grass that are healthier than anything else that’s down there.”

Anglers will take off from Lake Guntersville State Park in Guntersville, Ala., at 7 a.m. Saturday. Weigh-in will be held at Lake Guntersville State Park beginning at 1:30 p.m. Takeoff and weigh-in are free and open to the public.

Zona Hooks Up With G.Loomis Rods, Shimano Reels, Powerpro Braid

IRVINE, California- He says it’s an awesome opportunity to partner up with the company behind the rods and reels he’s been using most of his fishing life. Bassmaster television host and host of his own show on the Outdoor Channel, noted angler Mark Zona is now using G.Loomis rods, Shimano reels and PowerPro braid in all his fishing adventures, announces Chris Hess, marketing manager for Shimano American Corp.’s fishing tackle division.

“And while Mark is excited to be involved with all our fishing brands, we couldn’t be more pleased having him on the water, on the air and at events getting folks excited about fishing for smallmouth and largemouth bass,” Hess said. “We look forward to his input on all our G.Loomis, Shimano and PowerPro tackle – both from his own experiences and from the interaction he has with bass anglers nationwide.”

Zona notes that he learned how to use baitcasting reels with Shimano Bantam and Black Magnum reels, and “I cut my teeth on G.Loomis rods from knowing and fishing with their reps – who all seem to be great bass anglers – in southwest Michigan and northern Indiana,” Mark said. “And as much fun as I have filming my TV show, I’m very adamant and serious about catching fish – let me just say my G.Loomis rods and Shimano reels provide with me with a comfort level that helps me sleep better at night!”

A key point for wanting to be involved with G.Loomis and Shimano are the people at the company. “Everyone I have meet, from the company president, product development guys, marketing staff, you name it, they are all avid anglers,” said Zona. “They are out on the water, fishing hard, learning and experimenting with new techniques – it’s really a culture with that company – and one I want to be involved with.”

Zona is using NRX bass rods from G.Loomis, teaming them up with Shimano Core baitcasting reels and Stradic Ci4 spinning reels – spooled of course with PowerPro braided line. He entertains anglers – and teaches a few things – every Friday night on ‘Zona’s Awesome Fishing Show’ airing at 8pm EST on the Outdoor Channel.

WFN: World Fishing Network Launches Search For America’s Ultimate Fishing Town Presented By Eagle Claw

DENVER, CO. – Ask any angler across the USA the best place to fish and most of them will tell you about a hidden gem right in their own backyard. WFN: World Fishing Network, North America’s only 24-hour fishing lifestyle network, is posing that question to anglers through a nationwide contest and awarding a $ 25,000 prize and more to the community selected as WFN’s Ultimate Fishing Town USA.

Beginning on March 1, WFN is accepting nominations from anglers across America who feel that they fish in WFN’s Ultimate Fishing Town USA. In addition to the national recognition of being named WFN’s Ultimate Fishing Town USA and a $ 25,000 donation to be used towards fishing-related cause(s), the town will also receive 10 WaveSpin Reels plus a tourism boost when they are featured on a 30-minute show on WFN about fishing in their town.

The promotion is being supported by Eagle Claw, proud manufacturers of fishing gear and tackle in the USA since 1925, and WaveSpin Reels, the only reel with a tangle-free guarantee. Charter Communications is supporting the contest through multiple marketing tactics, as well as on-air, including a free preview of WFN for the month of March in the Northwest region. In addition, Knology will promote WFN’s Ultimate Fishing Town USA in four key markets (Sioux Falls, Iowa; Charleston, S.C.; Panama City, Fla.; and Pinellas Park, Fla.) and run a free preview of WFN in all Knology markets for the month of March. AT&T u-verse will be supporting the contest by broadcasting promo spots on their barker channel.

“No matter if they love to fish in a small rural community or a tourist mecca, we encourage everyone to nominate their favorite fishing spot,” said Shauna Gosevitz, Senior Director of Marketing for WFN. “This promotion gives us, and the participating towns, a great opportunity to profile the places where people love to fish all across the USA. We look forward to hearing their stories and letting the people choose WFN’s Ultimate Fishing Town USA.”

Last year, when WFN ran a similar promotion in Canada, the tiny fishing village of Port Alberni, B.C., with a population of just 18,000, earned the title of WFN’s Ultimate Fishing Town Canada because of their world-class salmon fishing and overwhelming community support. The result, according to the community’s tourism board, has been millions of dollars in free publicity and an immediate economic boom in tourism.

Baseball Hall of Famer and avid angler Mike Schmidt, who hit 548 home runs during a remarkable 18-year career, admits that he has probably reeled in more fish than that since his retirement. Schmidt will serve as the national spokesperson for the promotion, appearing in promotional spots and conducting a media tour to encourage anglers to nominate and vote for their ultimate fishing town.

“When I played baseball I certainly enjoyed being on the road, but there was nothing like my home ballpark,” said Schmidt. “Similarly, I love to fish all over the world, but nothing compares to my favorite fishing spots.”

How to Nominate Your Ultimate Fishing Town:
People can nominate their town between March 1-April 8, 2011by visiting www.wfnfishingtown.com. Nominations may include photos, videos and essays about why any town should be WFN’s Ultimate Fishing Town USA. If a town is already nominated, people are encouraged to add to the nomination with additional photos, videos and essays.

For the preliminary round of voting, WFN divided the United States into seven voting regions: PACIFIC: Alaska, Hawaii,Washington, Oregon, California, Nevada; ROCKIES: Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Colorado; SOUTHWEST: New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana; MIDWEST: North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana; NORTHEAST: Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, New York, District of Columbia;SOUTHEAST: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama; FLORIDA: State of Florida.

Following the March 1 – April 8 nomination period, the first round of public voting will be open from April 12 – May 3. To help spread the word and encourage voting, WFN will provide a variety of social media tools at the website, www.wfnfishingtown.com. The 20 finalists, comprised of the two entries in each of the seven regions with the highest vote totals plus six “wild card” entrants, will advance to the final round of voting from May 10 – 31. The results will be announced in June at a ceremony in the winning community emceed by a WFN personality.

ONLY DAYS LEFT TO BID ON BULLY BUGGER #1

WASHINGTON – One lucky winner has only a few days left to bid on “Bully Bugger #1,” the first in a limited edition of commemorative flies designed by renowned tyer Craig Mathews to help the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership celebrate 150 years of Theodore Roosevelt’s conservation legacy.

The red, white and blue Bully Bugger is a new twist on the timeless Woolly Bugger pattern. It not only shares Roosevelt’s unique American spirit. It also shares his prescription – the Bully Bugger is bedecked in Roosevelt’s trademark spectacles.

“Throughout his life, Roosevelt hunted way more than he fished,” Mathews says, “but things might have been different if he’d had this fly. When approached by the TRCP to help them celebrate the 150th year of Theodore Roosevelt’s legacy, I set out to tie a fly that the old Rough Rider himself would give his highest compliment — ‘Bully!’ So I started with a stout saltwater hook and the rest, as they say, is history.”

“Throughout his life, T.R. hunted way more than he fished,” says TRCP President and CEO George Cooper, “but things might have been different if he’d had the Bully Bugger. It evokes the same patriotism that T.R. exuded, and they’ve got similar flair.”

Bidding for Bully Bugger #1 has surpassed $ 250. Flies #2 through 150 are available at www.trcp.org for $ 150. Each will come custom-mounted in a hand-made shadowbox.

All proceeds from the auction and sale of the bully Bugger will be used to extend the TRCP mission of guaranteeing all Americans quality places to hunt and fish.

Inspired by the legacy of Theodore Roosevelt, the TRCP is a coalition of organizations and grassroots partners working together to preserve the traditions of hunting and fishing.
