The Weak Link,
I have fish both downrigger’s and planer rod’s (even ahead of they have been recognized as "sniper" rod’s). For the most portion I like fishing a planer rod better, but I have had a recuring issue that has me thinkng of going back again to the conventional way. I have had numerous time’s when fishing in an location wherever bigeye’s and a stray bluefin are mixed in with our goal fish. The issue I’ve had is when a "big" fish hit’s the planer rod (with it really is braid hefty adequate to manage a planer and 100lb leader), trip’s the planer, but there simply isn’t adequate time to consider 3 step’s back to again the drag down. The common sound is snap (the leader parting), then soon followed by an "awh chit"! I cannot support but think that if the very same fish hit a downrigger/planer set-up, with a rod that had standard drag set, that we’d have at least had a chance to actually see these fish. Don’t get me improper I/we have caught some actually great fish with the planer rod set-up, but have lost some even "nicer" a single since of it. Any suggestion’s??? Frank
