Kona Hawaii fishing report – August wrap-up

Kona Hawaii fishing report – August wrap-up .

This month was one of the finest months for blue marlin that Kona has observed in quite a whilst. With that, the Hawaiian Global Billfish Tournament, the Lazy Marlin Hunt and the Big Island Invitational Marlin Tournament have been all Huge successes. The marlin are nonetheless here in amounts but given that the tourism has slowed (as normally transpires towards the conclude of summer season) there aren’t several boats heading out. Even with a good marlin bite heading on even though, the only ensure that you’ll catch one particular is if you fish many days. Even the greatest marlin captains can occur up with a zero throughout a sizzling bite. I don’t consider myself one of the top marlin captains here but just yesterday we had 4 marlin bites and that’s some pretty excellent marlin action but by the end of the day, we only finished up with 1 mahi mahi in the box. I didn’t do any bottom fishing on this trip at the ask for of the customer. Much more on that afterwards.

The ono bite has picked up so there’s nevertheless hope for some variety of conclude of summertime run. The ono bite has been rather excellent way down South but the “ono Lane” appropriate in front of the harbor and the airport has only been making a few. There are nonetheless some spearfish biting but we’re heading toward the slowest time for them over the subsequent two months. Mahi mahi seem to be displaying up here and there so maybe we’ll get an early operate on them. Buyers usually inquire me if I like eating ono or mahi mahi the greatest. The two the two taste outstanding but here’s my get if I’ve been eating a whole lot of mahi mahi, an ono confident does flavor very good. If I’ve been eating a whole lot of ono, a mahi mahi certain does hit the spot.

Now it’s time for the “more on that later”. Hawaii’s bottom fishing year opens up in just a few of days on Sept. 1st. the year closed very last March and it’s illegal to bottom fish out of period. Hey, wait! I bottom fish year-spherical. How does that perform? Am I breaking the regulation? No. Thankfully there’s a loophole for us that are targeting the big recreation bottom fish as an alternative of the fish known right here as “the deep seven”. It has to do with the specific sort of gear I’m using so us catching one particular of “the deep seven” only happens on rare event. While I think any of the deep 7 bottom fish beat out an ono or mahi mahi for style, they just aren’t extremely exhilarating to catch. Specially for individuals that occur right here to sport fish and aren’t interested in ingesting their catch as was the scenario with yesterday’s charter. He only wished marlin. I’m Ok with that however. That indicates mahi mahi for dinner tonight. I’m so spoiled when it comes to good ingesting clean fish 🙂

tail up in the air. It really is just a gorgeous act of nature! This fish featured gave us fairly a present and

had my customers on some good fish the last few days and I just desired to share once again what we
we have been seeing out there on the flats. The tides for the rest of the month and all the way
into late September are likely to be wonderful for chasing some tails. Let us go get some!

Programs are in place to get the docks set back again in location &amp restore what is required in the next several days. Searching to get offshore out of ocean city for tuna and need some help with tackle. Greatest question is what reels should I go with. I’m thinkin of heading with 4 50w to operate long riggers and wb rods and grab 4 30w for quick rigger and flat lines. Does this sound right? Also, want to operate straight mono, keepin it basic for now.

Galapagos And Manta Marlin Fishing Report

Galapagos And Manta Marlin Fishing Report
Fellow Anglers:
In order to retain you knowledgeable I try out to place out a honest report of the action as best as I know it every time I get information. The reviews offered are a collections from the captains of our boats, boats we work with, close friends and other men and women.
Manta, Ecuador
The prior month has been very effective for blue marlin. Winds and tough seas have stored many anglers busy hunting, operating or carrying out other items. For that reason not as a lot of boats as normal have been out. Seas have been a constant five foot chop regular for the last three weeks and drinking water temperature has dropped from the large of 79 F 2 weeks back to 76 F. However most boats averaged 3 to six raises of primarily blue marlin the initial 50 % of August. The blues appear to be feeding on squid and flying fish mostly. The second fifty percent of August has revealed cooler h2o even even though the currents have been pushing South for almost a month. Marlin fishing has remained fairly very good for the most element with 2 to 3 raises of blues on typical from August fifteen to the 21. Fish have averaged 200 to 400 lbs with a handful of above 500 lbs reported.
Galapagos Islands
Drinking water stays fairly cold offshore San Cristobal with 67 F documented. Boats have not been fishing in the previous three weeks and are performing scheduled upkeep. Nevertheless passenger boat captains have noted striped marlin tailing routinely two to 10 miles West of port. Seas are rough and windy period is in complete swing. Fishing and sea problems should start off to improve by late September.

Taken by Captain Uncle Bob Morrissey, Salt Shaker!

Sandy Davis, retired professional charter captain formerly from Hilton Head, South Carolina is holding up two almost legal to keep rat reds. (Sandy Shea Davis a native Savannahian and is back home to stay!) As you know to keep a red fish the legal slot limit is 14 TL to 23 TL. Captain Uncle Bob Morrissey, Sandy’s Uncle and also mine too, took her on an inshore fishing trip with many catching options. According to the report sent to me by Captain Uncle Bob the bite was just right! And here is how it went…

While fishing on the in coming tide stage Captain Uncle Bob and his niece Sandy started catching lots of “rat reds.” According to the report these fish were so hungry that it didn’t matter whether or not the shrimp used was live, fresh dead, or parts of either. The bottom line it was a fight for the fish to get to the bait on their hook. Captain Uncle Bob also reported that once the water got deep enough spotted sea trout moved in and basically tried to steal the feeding show. So here’s what Captain Uncle Bob suggested whatever you do take plenty of live shrimp and keep the baits that die or have been hit but happen to stay on the hook. The reason being is that after bite gets into the “over ride mode” it’s not going to matter, because the fish will hit the leftovers!

This is a good report for us inshore fishermen. The reason being is all of the undersized fish should start being legal keeping size in about a month or two. This boils down to it looks like the fall to winter inshore bite is going to be a good one! Thanks Captain Uncle Bob for sending me this report!

Red fish, spotted sea trout, and flounder

Inshore catching suggestions that a fisherman can live by especially if they want to catch fish!

The larger red fish have taken to the grass. So therefore the high tide stage would be a good time to target this fish. The secret to not getting stuck in the grass once the water is gone is to fish high incoming until only one hour after tide change. The secret is to knowing about where the water exceeds the grass also known as the marsh in the area that you are going to fish. In some cases it looks like you have plenty of water as well as time when the tide turns to out. However, it’s a known fact that water when moving out of the grass on some occasions doesn’t leave as you would think. So if you are not familiar with where you are fishing under these circumstances rule of thumb should always be “Get out when the tide turns!”

Here’s the thing about a red fish…if there is food available in a certain area they will come back. Now it might not be the exact spot, but either right up or down the bank the red fish will show. I call this the watching game. In most cases those that catch the most fish watch first!

As far as best baits you can use what I call cast in place and let them sit baits or plastics rigged weed less. Those you cast in and let sit can be live finger mullet, mud minnows, or shrimp. However, if you are going to “let it sit” I suggest going with some sort of bait that is going to send a message. The message being scents and aroma! This is where seasoned bait works the best. Take a mullet out and cut it up like a loaf of bread and let it sit in the sun. The sun will basically bake it sealing some of the stinking juices in the meat. Once introduced into the water the smell delivered screams “its dinner time!” I have seen a red fish turn its head toward a smell like this!

Tips for those that just want to fish as well as catch!

For those that want to do a little inshore fishing for this up coming weekend..here are a few suggestions…The large red fish have taken to the grass…so therefore high tide stage is the best time…some nice spotted sea trout are being caught with live shrimp on traditional adjustable old school floats best times to fish is when the tide is moving.. As far as the flounder bite high out going while using mud minnows finger mullet of live shrimp!

Casting for shrimp

This is a very good time to do a little casting for shrimp. For those that don’t need shrimp for bait..guess what the shrimp being caught are big enough to eat. During this time you will also catch some nice size mullet, which are also good when scaled, split, and smoked whole. This is a suggestion straight from the old time. No matter what for those of you that want to have some fun it time to do a little casting…

Channel markers, buoys, and crab traps

When I say try channel markers, buoys, and crab traps I am certainly not talking about everyone of them. However if the area that these are located in looks fishy I suggest giving it a try…what does looking fishy mean…are there birds hovering or feeding? Is that an oily sheen on the surface trailing away? Most fishermen have an eye for this sort of stuff. If you see an area that is offering up some of these situations I suggest giving it a fishing try!

Fishing rips in rivers and sounds

Here’s a tip that you can take to the bank or I should say the old cooler! During this time with so much bait available fish do some strange feeding things. Spotted sea trout and red fish on some occasions will feed under and around formed rips. The funny thing is you could find this a possible catch a thon next to the bank or in the middle of the river or sound.. Please remember where the birds are feeding so are fish!

Artificial Reefs

The bottom fishing in these areas continues to offer up a lot of catching action. However, the catching great, but the keeping is bad. The reason being is most of the black sea bass caught in less than 60 feet of water are under the legal keeping size of 12 inches tail length. Out of a 10 hook ups and brings ins you might get to keep 1 fish. So therefore I guess you would call this 10 to 1 odds. However, when it comes to ocean fishing you really never know what you might catch. When practicing catch and release the fish send out distress signals, which bring in a much larger bite.

Savannah Snapper Banks

Offshore fishing this past week

While bottom fishing in about 100 feet at the Savannah Snapper banks with small pieces of squid and cut fish we caught vermilion snapper one after the other. When I moved a little to the west into about 90 feet we caught some of really nice size black sea bass. Mixed in with these fish were trigger fish, white grunt, red porgy, and a few flounder. As far as bigger fish we caught and released some nice genuine red snapper!

X-TRA-SEA BLUE WATER CREW

August 17, 2011 Wednesday departed 6:00 AM

August 18, 2011 Thursday returned high noon

Its sail fish, blue marlin maybe, dolphin, king mackerel, shark, swordfish kind of a story

Please meet the X-TA-SEA Crew holding up a nice Atlantic Sailfish, which was caught, fought, released!

After loading up the boat for a two day adventure the X-TA-SEA Crew headed out at round 6:00 AM. Their goal was to catch a state record sword fish. In 2010 the crew hooked up a sword fish state record contender, but as fish stories go the fish is still most likely swimming and growing as we speak.

The crew’s first stop was the R3 Navy Tower, which should be called their bait stop/shop in the ocean. They loaded up on many different kinds of live bait. After the bait well was full to capacity they started their trolling trek to the ledge. Once arriving and while making their first pull around the area one of the lines out started screaming. Brendin grabbed it and within seconds a sailfish “got air” trying to throw the hook. After realizing what he had hooked up, Brendin finessed the sail to the boat, Zane grabbed it bill, pulled it into the boat, some nice photos were taken, and back in the water the sail went.

After that action the crew continued to troll the area when the next rod went off. While the reel was screaming and the line was peeling off Captain Chris fought trying to get the rod out of the holder. On some occasions when a big fish hits bait and the drag is a little too tight it’s almost impossible to get the rod out of the holder. Captain Chris while releasing some tension got the rod up just as the large fish turned sideways pulling the hook. According to the report it looked like a big blue marlin and mostly likely was. After this hit and miss the crew found themselves in barracuda and Bonita feeding frenzy!

Attachment 202991

These are what I call brown sharks! Back in the old days when I fished the blue waters of the stream it seems that every time I passed over a ledge especially during the hot times several of these frisky sharks would take out my entire trolling spread! During my fishing times the most active shark holding ledges were the Triple Ledges. The sharks would lay in ambush on the down current side of the ledge. From the bridge I could see the sharks as I approached.. These sharks were so determined to hit and eat our baits that the only way to avoid an attack was to just not troll the area. This area was covered with all kinds of sharks from the brown ones to the scalloped hammerheads. I would always tell my customers, whatever you do don’t sit on the gunnels and don’t fall over board!!!

Flying Sharks

Before you say, “WHAT?” I had this happen two times on the same fishing trip. A shark jump up, grabbed the bait that was on a hook on a rig that had the sinker wrapped around the reel handle. Yes, the shark got hooked up, the sinker unwrapped, and into the water it went. Luckily the drag was set light and the sinker wasn’t wrapped locked in. A customer that was sitting on the gunnels by the rod that was air borne hit by the shark almost got hit by the 16 ounce sinker that was swinging crazy before hitting the water. The second hit came right behind the first one almost hitting the customer first before the bait. This happened two times in one day. Now you know the meaning of “Flying Sharks!” It can happen and it did!

Back to the blue water report…

To get away from their current unwanted barracuda and Bonita bite they troll out to about 1,400 feet of water. Once reaching this depth their plan was to do a little day time sword fishing. At this time squid baits were rigged, and dropped at different decided depths.

After getting the third line out and right after Brendin had put the rod in the holder the rod tip started to bounce. He then picked the rod up, it double over, and the fish on the other end started trying to empty the spool. While all this was going on belt/harness were being adjusted and after about 10 minutes into this fight the line went slack. However, after just a few minutes into the fight all on board knew that this was a very big fish. It was time to check the bait. For those that don’t know just retrieving the bait from this depth does take it toll. Once getting bait back to the surface it wasn’t touched. After a few minutes of speculating it was decided that the sword must have made a few attempts to swat at the bait and then got tangled in the leader.

Over the years it had come to my attention that most sword fish are not hooked up, but actually wrapped up in the leader. Some call it “cat and mouse games” while others call it getting wrapped up in the leader while trying to kill their intended meal.

Nice Atlantic Sailfish

As the sun faded the X-TA-SEA crew switched tactics to night fishing under a bright ¾ moon. And here’s what happened next ..

Captain Chris reported ..

We could see lightning to the North and South of us, but according to our radar the storms were each about 20 miles away and pretty much stationery. Brendin was working two lines and Zane was working one. Brendin had several hits, but couldn’t seem to hook up until the third time. The fish wasn’t putting up much of a fight as he was bringing it to the boat and we weren’t sure what to expect. Zane then said he had a fish on as well. When Brendin’s fish reached boat side we could see it was a small swordfish and Zack leaned over, grabbed its bill, and brought it into the boat about the same time Zane brought a Mahi Mahi into the boat. It was pretty exciting that we caught a swordfish and a Mahi at the same time. Swordfish need to be 47 inches from the lower jaw to the fork of the tail and this one was a few inches shy. We took a few pictures and released it back into the dark.

Attachment 202996

Here’s a great picture of the X-TA-SEA Crew holding up a nice juvenile sword fish and nice Mahi Mahi. The crew has a great goal, which I know that they are going to accomplish. The goal is to break the current swordfish Georgia State Record, which is 86 pound. This record according to the Georgia Saltwater Gamefish Records was caught in 1980 by W. H. Lippitt. I know from their reports that the crew would have already had a would be state record on the hook in 2010, but as you all know that’s fishing. When they do catch the sword fish state record it’s going to be a big one for sure!

After setting out the lines again we notice the wind had picked up and the storms seemed a little closer. A quick look at the satellite radar and we could see that the storms were growing in size as well as towards each other. I wanted to head deeper to try to avoid them but majority ruled. We headed back in toward the ledge figuring we would fish there once we got out of the way of the storms. Unfortunately the storms came together into one big storm and began to move in our direction. We wanted to head west and eventually we were going directly north to try to stay ahead of the storm. It was filled with lightning and the boys watched the light show as we ran for about three hours until the storm slowed and I was able to pull back on the throttles.

Attachment 202995

We were now in 80 feet of water and didn’t have enough fuel to make it back to the hungry swordfish. We made the best of it and trolled around the R7 Navy Tower for a short while and picked up a nice king mackerel and a few more barracuda. We decided to call it a day and we were back to the house by noon. The only thing the boys could talk about for the next few days was planning the next trip to try for the state record, again. Talk with you soon,

Capt. Chris

Captain “Little” Tommy Williams along with the Daly Double Blue Water Crew had quite a day while fishing the blue waters. While pulling solid black, purple/black, and blue/white Ilanders rigged with large ballyhoo Wahoo bites happened. The best bite occurred while pulling baits at different depths around the live bottom areas located in

155 to 165 feet of water called “B-Liner Hole!”

While trolling the team caught one 30 pound Wahoo, one 60 pound Wahoo, one 40 pound bull as well as some smaller dolphin also known as a Mahi Mahi, and released two nice Atlantic Sail fish. Then it was decided to do a little bottom fishing. They caught foot ball vermilion snapper, large red porgy, and black sea bass.

August 20, 2011 Saturday

Cotton Picker Crew

Captain “Little” Tommy Williams along with the Cotton Picker crew had a great day of trolling as well as bottom fishing. While trolling they picked up some nice pound Wahoo and then it was decided to do a little bottom fishing. Once dropping to the bottom with cut squid it was decided promptly by bite delivered that this was the right decision. The crew caught large Gulf Stream size vermilion snapper also known as b-liners or footballs, red porgy better known by us old school fishermen as “silver snappers,” black sea bass, and an assortment of other large size bottom fish.

LAKE LANIER IS DOWN 6.6 FEET, THE CREEKS ARE SLIGHTLY STAINED AND THE MAIN LAKE IS CLEAR & 84 DEGREES.

Spotted bass are on the main lake points all over the lake. The rocks, mud and sand points in Two and Four Mile creeks are good areas. Main lake reef markers are areas worth casting a top water shad stick bait any time of the day. Follow the top water lures with a ¾ ounce Mini Me spinner bait and pull it about 5 feet under the surface. Hand poured worms on the drop shot rigs are still the best all day technique lake wide. This is where the Lowrance Down Scan along with the Lowrance 200 kHz sonar on split screens can really make this effort pay off. Up the rivers and creeks the spots are on rocky points and banks and are aggressive on small shad crank baits and worms. The small #5 Shad Raps in the baby bass or shad colors on light line will work. Use the stop and go retrieve and run it by docks and stop it. Spots can be caught on the pearl and chartreuse Fat Albert curly tailed grubs on a 1/8 ounce jig head. Depths are 10 to 20 feet and work the main lake points on the lake. The marina docks hold a lot of fish and doodle the lures slowly to draw strikes. Live minnows and night crawlers are and fish these baits straight down.

This Lake Lanier Striper report is from Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena of Big Fish On! Guide Service, 404 561 2564. www.bigfishonguide.com

Striper fishing is good. The morning bite continues to be slow. You may want to wait until late morning or early afternoon before hitting the lake. The stripers are scattered but they are sticking to the river and creek channels from Orr Creek to the Dam. Your odds of finding fish are best in 80 to 140 feet of water. The fish you mark with your Lowrance structure scan at 40 feet have been very stubborn and difficult to get to bite. The fish under the 40 foot fish at 60 to 100 feet are much more cooperative. The summer time techniques of trolling and down rods with herring is best this week. These will be the same until the lake turns over. Try power reeling to ‘fire up’ those stubborn fish. Drop your bait well below the fish and reel your bait up through the fish. Try different speeds. This approach will often trigger a reaction bite and can serve to "fire up" the rest of the fish in the school. Shorten the leaders to about three foot when power reeling. You will have a lot less trouble with tangles and knots than with the long leaders. Use a 2 ounce Captain Mack’s bucktail jig tipped with a herring. Use 10 foot leaders with 12 pound test fluorocarbon for the down rods. We have had some luck trolling this week. Lead core at 8 to 9 colors with Captain Mack’s bucktail jig and a chartreuse or white 4 inch shad body. Umbrella rigs are working at 140 to 160 feet behind the boat. Use a 9 arm rig loaded with 9, 1 ounce bucktail jigs with 4 inch shad bodies. Remember to power up when turning or you will put the inside rig in the trees. Stop by and meet Captain Ken West and Captain Mike Maddalena at the Chamber of Commerce Expo in Cumming on September 8, 2011 from 2pm until 7pm. Finding fish in trees is a much simpler with the new Lowrance structure scan. WEST POINT LAKE IS DOWN 7.3 FEET, STAINED & 89 DEGREES BY CHRIS BELL

Bass fishing has continued to be tough. Look for little change until outside temperatures begin to drop and hold steady for a few days. With current high temperatures the bite can be really tough. My best success has came from fishing soft plastics slowly on points and humps down lake south of the 109 Bridge to Wehadkee Creek. Our best baits have been Carolina Rigged trick worms in Watermelon and 1/8 ounce shaky head worms in water melon as well. You have to work structure very slowly to catch fish.

Hybrid and striper fishing is fair. Fish are schooling lake wide over the tops of humps and road beds following shad on the surface. The action will be fast so use fast moving shad imitating baits. Use ¼ ounce Rat L Traps and the Pop R. Work baits quickly to resemble fleeing shad. Once top water action slows use live bait over the same humps and road beds that produced with top water earlier in the morning. The best locations are on the southern end of the lake.

Crappie fishing has been fair. Fish have not moved much over the last few weeks and do not look for other major movements until temperatures begin entering a fall pattern. Fish have fully committed to deeper water. Look for deep brush piles near main lake during day time hours. Best fishing has come from bridge pilings at night. Down line live bait twelve to fifteen feet deep.

LAKE ALLATOONA IS DOWN 6.8 FEET, 88 DEGREES AND CLEAR

This Lake Allatoona bass report is from Matt Driver, www.proanglerradio.com.

Bass fishing is fair to good and some cooler weather would be nice because it is miserable in the sun right now. Shaky heads tipped with a finesse worm is hard to beat. You can upsize to a 8" big bite finesse worm for larger fish. We use the larger worm because of more action. Finesse Jigs in brown and orange with a small chunk. The jig works deep as well as on shallow wood. The night bite is still the time to be on the water. For the kids its fun to hit the docks and boat ramp with ultra light tackle for bream and small bass. Weightless night crawler and crickets are working best. The key is light line and very small hooks.

Line side fishing is fair but this has been the slowest week we have seen all year. We could use a major cold front or a ton a rain to get these finicky fish to eat. The fish are still schooling in depths for 20 to 40 feet deep and trolling single bucktails and small crank baits are best. Live bait will also catch you a few fish. Down line your bait over the river channels between 20 to 40 feet deep. Make sure to use long leaders at 6 to 8 feet long. The white bass and small hybrid fishing is still the best bite on the lake. These fish are schooling on top from sun up to sun down. Just ride until you find them and mid lake has been the best. A Zara Spook Jr. is working best for these little line sides.

LAKE HARTWELL IS DOWN 63FEET, CLEAR & 88 DEGREES

Bass fishing is slow but there are a few fish being caught at daylight and dusk, all over the lake. Small top water lures early and late on the banks is barely fair. After the sun gets up, it’s tough to get a strike. The best bet is to go up river and cast small Sluggo’s in shad. Main lake points are fair early on top water prop baits. The river fish are active on the river ledges and stay close to the current. Use a 3/8 ounce jig and plastic or pork trailer in black and blue. Watch for any activity on the shallow grass lines and cast to them quickly. Small shad crank baits will get a strike. Use a watermelon seed worm is fair. Down lake the bass are on the main lake and secondary creek points. Shad Raps in the #7 shad black back on points all day can be productive, run and gun.

August 26, 2011

LAKE RUSSELL IS DOWN 2.9 FEET, CLEAR & 87 DEGREES

Bass fishing is fair early and late on Zoom’s Creepy Crawlers in motor oil on the up lake river points. A few top fish will hit a gold black back Bang A Lure early and late. Try the Zoom Trick worm in centerline yellow. The down lake fish are biting any small blue worms or blue back crank baits on the points and humps. The lake is still very clear so use light line. The Zoom pumpkinseed lizard is fair using a long Carolina rig and a full one ounce weight to points. The small Stanley buzz bait is fair up the rivers in coves. Down lake, the Lunker Lure buzz baits with all white skirts and silver blades is fair but run and gun any wood. Stay in the creeks and on docks up the rivers for best day fishing. The short Carolina rig with a small green or motor oil French fry worm on points down lake is fair.

CLARK HILL IS DOWN 6.6 FEET, STAINED & 88 DEGREES

Bass fishing has been slow all week and the area needs some rain. Up the river, use the Shad Raps in #5 and #7 in the silver and black back and perch colors. Rip rap rocks around the bridges with shad colored lures is fair. Cast parallel to the rocks and bump them with the lures. Later in the day and at dusk, small shad and blue combinations crank baits on the points and humps are fair. The Zoom green lizard and a long Carolina rig can draw a few strikes on road beds and creek ditches. Small top water stick baits on grass lines or stumps can be fair early and late. Early use a small all white trick worms or a small silver blade 1/4 ounce buzz bait. After the sun gets high, go to the river and bream colored crank baits or in the pockets can get a strike.

LAKE SEMINOLE IS DOWN ONE FOOT, CLEAR AND 90 DEGREES BY MATT BATY

Bass fishing is fair up and down lake. Zoom’s pumpkinseed lizard either on a Texas or Carolina rig and hit the main lake points that are at around 8 feet during the day. Sebile Swimmers and the Sebile soft baits in shad colors can also work with a slow steady retrieve on points all over the lake. On the lower lake in the heat of the day get out the dark blue jigs and a Zoom salt trailer on the grass lines can get a strike. Stay close to the river current on points at 5 to 10 feet. Buzz baits are fair can be good all day in the pockets right off the river. Lunker Lures all white buzz baits are good any time of the day on bank cover. The fish are at a lot of depths and moving early and late. The #7 Shad Raps in the shad and carp colors on Sufix 832 braid will work.

LAKE GEORGE IS FULL, 89 DEGREES & CLEAR BY CLAYTON BATTS

Bass fishing is fair and as the water temperature has increased, the fish have continued to move slightly deeper in their summertime locations. Fish during the week, if possible. Work the 15 to 20 foot range and look for main lake bottom irregularities that cause current breaks such as humps, points and indentions. Stumps or brush are real fish magnets on these type places, especially if shad are present. Once you find an area with the right ingredients, start out with a crank bait. Use the Spro Little John DD when the fish are deep this week. Use either the citrus shad or spooky shad color. Once a school stops biting the crank bait, you can often pick up another fish or two by slowing down and fishing with a Carolina rig or Texas rig. On the Carolina rig use the Big Bite 6 inch finesse worm in green pumpkin. On the Texas rig, try a Big Bite Kreit-tail worm in green pumpkin using a 3/8 ounce weight. With both of these rigs, fish them fairly rapidly until you get into some type of cover.

LAKE WEISS IS DOWN 1.40 FEET, LIGHT STAIN & 85 DEGREES BY COLLINS GUIDE SERVICE

Now available for sale 50 of my proven GPS waypoints for off shore structure for Bass and Crappie fishing on Weiss Lake, Alabama. E mail ken@havefunfishing.com

Bass fishing is poor and they have really turned off over the last couple of weeks or so. Some Bass are being caught very early and very late. A few good fish are being caught in the upper Chattooga river and the upper Coosa river, where there is more current and higher oxygen levels. Carolina rigged plastics are working right now, green pumpkin and pumpkin seed seem to be the dominant colors. Medium to deep running crank baits and 1/2 ounce spinner baits slow rolled are also catching some bass. Top water baits are working fair, early and late, around deeper sea walls. Look for this pattern to hold for the next month or so, unless we get a lot of rain and really put some oxygen back in the water. Weiss Lake always gets a big algae bloom in late summer, which depletes the oxygen from the water and make’s the fish very lethargic, so the dog days of late summer can be some of the toughest of the year.

Striper fishing is poor and they are in fair numbers in Little River and the upper Chattooga River. Little Spring creek is also producing some fish. The canal and the powerhouse lake are also producing some Stripers. Live Shad is the key to catching these fish, flat lines and down lines fished 8 to 10 feet deep and trolled slowly are producing some great striper fishing.

Crappie fishing is poor and the crappie are mainly under the docks and out deep 8 to 16 feet, on the channel ledges and suspended in the old river channels, Night fishing with live minnows with lights on the edges of the old Little River channel is producing some fair crappie. Shooting Jiffy Jigs in 1/24 ounce under docks is still producing some decent crappie fishing. A few Crappie are being caught on minnows from under lights at night off docks.

LAKE OCONEE IS FULL, 90 DEGREES AND A LIGHT STAIN UP RIVER

Bass fishing is fair. It is clear on the main lake and stained up the rivers. The bass fishing has improver over the past week. The best bite is in the late afternoon when Georgia Power is pulling water. When the water is moving, look on the south end points and work deep diving crank bait off of the points into the deeper water. A green pumpkin zoom U tail worm fish on a short Carolina rig will also work in the same areas. While the water is moving you can work the rip rap on the bridges with a Rapala DT10 in a shad pattern. Some fish are still coming off of the deep water boat docks with a worm fished as far back as you can get it. Use a Zoom u-tail worm in a dark green or brown pattern. Color is not as important as location.

Line side fishing is poor. As the water cools this fall look for the fish to start showing up in the River bend area of the lake, and also at the dam. Right now you can catch the smaller fish that are schooling all over the lake in the afternoons. These fish are not staying up very long and are very spooky so have your top water plugs ready when you see them. Sugar Creek has the Capt. Mac u-rigs in stock along with Okuma line counter reels and Okuma striper rods. They also have a complete line of Zoom baits on hand. If you like to see the Lowrance HDS units in action, give me a call and we can show you how it works. You can have an on the water demo just give me a call.

LAKE SINCLAIR IS DOWN 1.3 FEET, 91 DEGREES, MOSTLY STAINED.

Bass fishing has been slow all over the lake and the river fish are not biting well. Early and late, silver blades and a white skirt on the wood or grass lines can draw a fish, but run and gun all over the creeks. Day fishing is slow but the Power lizards and worms in dark reds or motor oil colors on Texas rig on any wood on around the grass beds is the best bet. Go up the river and flip a dark Zoom U tail on a Texas rig greens on wood and brush very tight bank and river structure. Later in the day, try casting or flipping the river docks and shallow bank with a Zoom motor oil lizard. Main lake docks and sea walls are fair and a buzz bait early and late. Night fishing has been slow all week. Try the Texas rigged red or black worms on any dock with lights.
