OIFC fishing report 8-14

The weather called for 50% chance of thunderstorms this afternoon. The storms held off until after dark. Too bad for the flounder and drum as Brandon Sauls, Jeff Beck and Clay Morphes hit the flats on Brandon’s Bonecruscher.

The crew fished with live shrimp and landed several flounder and drum. They fished the Sunset Bridge and in behind Ocean Isle on a falling tide They had several small flounder and numerous keepers. One of the reds was 26".

"2011 Cape Fear Sailfish Classic" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 08/14/11

This year’s very successful CapeFear Sailfish Classic is in the books. The overall champion was 18 Reeler, a 33 ft. Grady owned by Vance Forbes of Wrightsville beach. They released 2 sails on Friday which they caught near the 23 Mile Rock.

The 1st sailfish was released by Reggie Abbot who captained Daddy Rabbit out of Fayetteville.The largest dolphin was day 2, weighing 16.62 lbs., caught by House Divided.

Most importantly was that over $ 30K was raised for Cys World. Please visit them at www.cysworld.org. The Boston Whaler was won by Dell Murphy of Wallace, N.C.

"Report" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 08/14/11

I know we’ve been pretty quiet over the past month, particularly on the offshore scene. The honest reason is there has not been a whole lot to report. However, that doesn’t mean we have not been catching fish and making people happy. Most of our mid to late Summer charter fishing is 4 and 6 hour, half day trips. This keeps our range to within 20 miles and cuts down on options. Many of our trips are for Spanish Mackerel, which have been biting very good all Summer. Lately they’ve been in 25-30 feet of water around Glass Minnow and Pogy pods- lots of Blues mixed in as well. On our 6 hour trips we have been giving the Kings an opportunity to cooperate, but they really haven’t been doing much. However, we have run across a few fish and the occasional Mahi — here are a couple of pics from last week as proof that there are in fact Kings and Mahi still out there and there is good reason to go fishing.

I’m really looking forward to this week’s cooler weather. Maybe it will spark the fish to move and get biting.

The tournament was a great success, the OVERALL CHAMPION is 18 Reeler, a 33 Grady owned by Vance Forbes of Wrightsville Beach, They released 2 sails on Friday near the 23 mile rock. The first sailfish of the tourney was released by Daddy Rabbott of Fayetteville, captained by Reggie Abbott. The largest dolphin of Day 2 was House Divided, with a 16.62 mahi!

Thanks to all who participated in the tournament and who bought raffle tickets to win the boat. Through the tournament and the raffle, over $ 15,000 was raised for Cy’s World foundation. Plans are underway to spend the money on getting more kids on the water and in the woods.

"Family Outing" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 08/14/11

Capt Chris (OC) Dew and 1st mate Aaron Dew took Brett and Joanna Devore along with their children Shelby (8), Samantha (11), and Savanna (3) on a near shore fishing trip Friday.

They spent the majority of the day trolling for spanish. Along with the spanish, they boated one monster of a barracuda. Chris said this was one of the nicest families he had met.

"’cuda" | OIFC World Cat / Carolina Cat | 08/12/11

Ken and Matt Ritch along with Stafford Dunbar landed this citation barracuda at the Shark Hole today. They had hooked a king and the ‘cuda ate the king and went on to give 30 minute battle until he was landed. The fish was a citation size 52" and 32#. My understanding is they were going to release the predator.

Joe Seegars also sent me a picture of some 5+ lb. spanish he caught today.
