Little Miss Judy Believe It or Not! “Captain Judy and Her Customers”

Inshore

Sounds are holding sharks, whiting, blue fish, and surfacing school menhaden. Don’t forget your cast net, because there is plenty of bait catching possibilities!

Stripers and Wipers

The Savannah River showed some real signs of life this past week. While fishing up river passed the Westin Stripers and Wipers were caught while pitching artificial. The afternoon bite was good with customers catching some nice striped bass and hybrid bass while pitching 4 inch Storm paddle tail lures. Most of the fish weighted in at around 5 to 7 pounds and were caught fought and released! All I can say now is “its striped bass time!”

Inshore Red fish Bite

I am not going to lie to you about this one. The old red fish has been doing exactly like it wants when it wants. Some fishermen have got a handle while others don’t. It seems that even those that fish all of the time can’t get a handle on the red fish’s crazy feeding patterns. Here’s what we do know…

Prefect baits to get the job done!

Attachment 191477

Here’s what finger mullet look like in a live well. These fish work great when used live as bait. However, if you feel that your bait is too small consider just cutting you mullet up like you would a loaf of bread! One slice at a

Prefect size mud minnows!

On Friday April 15, 2011 with the winds blowing, but not enough to pitch you out of the boat a red fish bite could be had. However, to catch you had to be there way before the bite happened. In other words you had to be anchored with bait in place as well as be very quite. The fish fed on the last of the out going tide stage on Friday, which was around 9:00 AM. While fishing cut mullet right on the bottom as well as mud minnows some action was had. The red fish picked up the scent of the cut mullet and the flounder went for the mud minnows.

The whiting are biting!

On Saturday April 16, 2011 the wind howled and looming clouds made everyone think that the sky was going drop hail and lots of rain. However, the only thing we did get was a few big drops of rain and lots of 30 knot gusts. The winds cause unusually rough conditions in the sounds and on the beachfronts offering fishermen a chance to try out their navigating skills. As far as the bite a few red fish were caught. Most of my captains opted out to just go whiting fishing. The reason being with winds like these limited areas to fish get crowded quick especially on a Saturday. The bait used for the whiting was small pieces of peeled shrimp.

Whiting fishing doesn’t seem too technical at least to most fishermen. However, here’s something that all fishermen needs to know and it’s all about the shrimp used as bait. It has been brought to my attention that not all frozen dead bait is the same. There is the shrimp that you purchase at the grocery store in the seafood section. It seems to be OK, but since these shrimp are headless that’s one more smell that goes out the window. These shrimp do work I have used them dozens of times. It’s best to take them off the ice and let the sun dry them, which believe it or not increases the shrimp smelling juices. The frozen shrimp purchased at the bait houses also seem to work. However, not mentioning any specific brand names, but some frozen shrimp, which may or may not have been treated with anything does not seem to work as well as the others. Once again this might have been a one time happening and all shrimp might work. However, I am suggesting that if you have the choice to purchase frozen at the bait houses or at the grocery store that you go this route.

31 pound trophy red fish showing off all of its colors!

Edward Cole, Bryan Keith Cole, Coda Cole, Lucky Kira Reedy and crew went fishing on Sunday April 10, 2011 in Ossabaw Sound. According to Edward, after reading my fishing report he decided to give one of my suggestions a try. After catching quite a few whiting the fishing team decided to step outside the fishing box. It was decided to rig up a live whiting and give it a try, which is one of specialties. Edward reported that he was sold on my tip, because within 5 minutes he caught his first and biggest ever trophy red fish. Edward’s trophy red also known as a “bull” weighted in at 31 pounds and measured right at 36 inches.

Edward Cole and Bryan Keith Cole holding up 31 pounds worth of trophy red fish! Do you know that according to my father the number of spots on a red fish indicates how many times that they escaped from being eaten my a dolphin. Well, Edward’s fish might have escaped numerous times from the old dolphin, but not from the old live whiting tip! Please know that his fish was carefully released and is still swimming today!

A big thanks goes out to the Edward Cole Crew for sending in such a great fishing report! Here’s wishing everyone a big fish catching season! Thanks Captain Judy

Spotted sea trout

Not much to report…but there are few being caught. My suggestion is to fish areas you have caught them before

Inshore Sheepshead Season Is On!

Attachment 191486

Mrs. Eva Tucker and “The Bull Man” while fishing inshore with Captain Jack McGowan caught 30 Sheepshead. The secret according to Captain Jack is to work the vertical structure and keep it a moving event. He also suggests that when the water is clear, fishing deeper and closer to the structure. Sheepshead can see better than you think!

Sheepshead are still at the offshore artificial reefs!

Big Sheepshead for sure!!

Artificial reefs

Looking for the arrival of the large Spanish mackerel…any day now!

Sheepsheads are still the deal and as far as bait the fiddler crab is the one to use. A few sea bass are showing up in the reefs in less than 50 feet of water and are mixed in size. Reefs in 50 plus feet of water are holding some really nice sea bass. Please remember the season is not open for keeping these fish. The black sea bass season doesn’t open till June 1. Please release these fish as soon as possible.

Savannah Snapper Banks

Report

Nice vermilion snapper caught on a small piece of squid!

Savannah Snapper Banks

This area is a good place to go fishing, because catching is definitely happening here!

Attachment 191481

Nice Flounder

This flounder was caught while bottom fishing at the Savannah Snapper banks with a small piece of squid. Proving once again you really never know what you might catch especially when you drop your baited hook in the ocean!

The red snapper Ordeal!

There are several ways to relieve air from an inflated air bladder. The secret is to not push the knife blade in too far. It’s only necessary to penetrate the bladder just enough to release the compressed air. You should be able to hear the air escape and feel the bladder flattening a bit.

Attachment 191474

As you know red snapper off our coast is and has been closed for a while. And I would have to say, “Since no red snapper fishing or should I say keeping is taking place, there are plenty of these fish around to bite your hook!” Unfortunately, we can’t keep them and of course we don’t want to harm them so releasing them correctly is a very important thing.

Since I have fished a lot over the years knowing where these fish are going to most likely be schooling is known by most of us seasoned fishermen. So normally I try to stay away from these areas. However, since there is no keeping of red snapper there are certainly a lot of them, for sure. Now we are catching them in almost all areas where they were not found before. Not just a few, but in great numbers. So please if you catch a red snapper or a dozen, please carefully deflate air bladder and release as soon as possible!

Bill Fish!

Blue Water Report

I going to say, “The blue water season is now in full swing!” This means if you get a good weather day I suggest making this run, because it can definitely be worth it. Blue water fishermen are still catching black fin tuna, Wahoo, dolphin, and an occasional billfish either hooked up or not! I call this time of the year “The Big Transition!” The reason being is the bait is moving, the fish are moving, and while all this is going on everything that swims is hungry. This time offers more serious direct hits and better hook ups!

Freshies Report!

Jennifer Musselwhite of Bonair, Georgia

Jennifer’s fine looking channel cat was caught while fishing a fat chicken liver on the bottom. The rig used was a classic as well as dependable Zebco 33, which was loaded with 10 pound test line. The cat weighted in at 15 lbs 2 oz! Which boils down too…fried catfish, broiled catfish, grilled catfish, catfish stew, catfish sandwiches, catfish gumbo, catfish chowder, catfish Creole, and at this point “it’s all good!” Thanks Jennifer for sending me this report! Please keep them coming!

Duct tape cure!

A customer comes on board. I noticed that he had a small piece of duct tape attached to his forehead. I looked for a moment, but still had to ask, “Why?” this is the answer I got. I have a terrible hangover and they say that duct tape will fix anything! Not only do I love my job, but also my customers!
