In response to a comment by user: reddibacon: “way to delete my comment, you coward.” Dear Reddibacon, I did indeed delete your comment. I found it juvenile, and as I agree with you about endangered species, I thought your approach actually made me and other conservationists appear crude and informidable. I was actually going to delete the whole video of the Mako Shark encounter, as I don’t want people to view it. The same way I would delete a video of other activities I do not condone. I have changed my mind. I have been researching the Mako Shark’s endangered status all morning in response to your comments. Apparently they are listed as threatened, but not endangered, and the rating is regional (ie one blanket rating is not realistic for the entire planet – as in some areas they are more or less rare than others). I am not condoning the killing of a threatened species by leaving this video up – in fact, I was unaware that they were listed at all. This video remains now in order to educate other fisherman about researching the status of the fish they may catch before they go out fishing. I am an owner of a sportfishing company in Mexico, and starting today, we have initiated a release policy for any species regionally listed in Baja California Sur, the same as we do for Billfish. Despite his/her lack of manners and tact, I must thank reddibacon for assisting me in this. Apparently the Mako Shark is listed as “threatened” on the endangered species list. We are currently …
Israeli Navy shoots at Gaza fishermen and international volunteers
GAZA: 1st September 2008, the first day of Ramadan, several volunteers with the Free Gaza Movement and the International Solidarity Movement accompanied a small fleet of seven fishing vessels from Gaza City port. The fishermen exercised their right to fish in Gazan territorial waters, providing them with a livelihood and food for the besieged people of Gaza. The fishing fleet reached approximately nine miles offshore and began trawling along the Gazan coast, well within international limits. Usually the Israeli Navy prevents Gazan fishing vessels from accessing beyond six miles and in many cases only three miles by attacking the boats, sometimes lethally, or by arresting the fishermen. However, this day’s fishing resulted in a highly successful catch due to the ability to access richer fishing grounds further offshore. Two Israeli Naval gunboats approached the fleet soon after leaving port and began firing “warning shots” shortly afterwards. They were aware that internationals were on some of the boats. The Israeli Navy continued shooting multiple times at the fishing vessels, one of which was fired upon at least seven times. They also deployed explosive charges in the water and attempted to de-stabilise some of the boats by creating a strong wake. Communication was established with the Israeli Navy via VHF radio, informing them that everyone onboard were unarmed civilians and requesting that the Israeli Navy stop shooting. The volunteers will continue to join Gazan …

Red-hot Bahamas Mahi-Mahi fishing

Is the biggest one 40 pounds? I’m saying it probably is, but feel free to make your own guess in the comments. Red-hot Mahi-Mahi fishing action in the Bahamas with Johnnny Vegas, E-Baum Stone and yours truly. Our guide is Sterling Moss out of Harbour Island. Mahi-Mahi are also called Dolphin-fish and Dorado. Check out the way they rapidly change color from yellow to blue. They were yummy. Unfortunately Delta airlines lost our cooler and our fillets never made it home with the rest of our luggage. Pay attention for dramatic color changing at 2:30 and 6:15. It’s amazing how fast those fish can change colors from yellow to blue!
