Coiba separated from continental Panama about 12000 to 18000 years ago when sea levels rose. Plants and animals on the new island became isolated from mainland populations and over the millennia most animals have diverged in appearance and behavior from their mainland counterparts. The island is home to many endemic subspecies, including the Coiba Island Howler monkey, the Coiba Agouti and the Coiba Spinetail. Coiba was home to the Coiba Cacique Indians until about 1560, when they were conquered by the Spanish and forced into slavery. A penal colony was built on the island in 1919. During the years that Panama was under the Dictatorships of Omar Torrijos and Manuel Noriega, the prison on Coiba was a feared place with a reputation for brutal conditions, extreme tortures, executions and political murder. Nobody knows exactly how many people were killed in the prison during this period, but sources claim that the number could be close to three hundred. As such, the island was avoided by locals, and other than the prison, was completely undeveloped. After the prison was closed down in 2004, its pristine condition made it ideal as a preserve. It is one of the last places in Central America the Scarlet Macaw can be found in large numbers in the wild. The island is about 75% forested with a large fraction standing as ancient forest. Some people say Singapore is a litter-free country. What you probably didn’t know, is that the tiny country produces a whopping 7000 tons of garbage a day – 94 percent of which is vaporized in the incinerator, while the remaining 6 percent of ash is buried. @However, the last landfill on the crowded main island was filled up in 1999. Since then, Singapore has been taking its trash out to sea, to the world’s first offshore landfill, on the small, but ever growing, island of Sumakau. In the latest of our series of reports on sustainable development in Singapore, we went to investigate how the government is reducing the environmental impact of the landfill. ( 7100 tons of trash a day ) Singapore is booming and its population is approaching 5 million people. The flip side of development is the 7100 tons of rubbish it produces every day. ( Waste ash sent to island landfill ) The largest incinerator receives 3000 tons a day, which is reduced to 700 tons of ash, 20 percent of the original mass, and 10 percent of the volume. The ash is then loaded onto ships and sailed to the largest offshore landfill in the world. ( Sumakau lagoon filled with waste ) The Sumakau landfill is surrounded by 4-mile long barrier, creating a huge lagoon, which is further split into 11 sections. The seawater is then drained to make way for the ash. ( Sumakau Landfill manager, Ong Chong Peng ) ” Before we use it, we seal the pipe, and see how much water is left. Most of the time, we don’t need to pump

Fishing Trip to east side of Gibraltar

Sea angling off Gibraltar.

www.wideopen.dk Trailer for a DVD fishing movie. Thomas Mosgaard is a biologist, and he has a very deep knowledge regarding the behaviour of the seatrout and its holding spots. He has great experience catching seatrout in rivers, and we tag along as he fishes a number of smaller rivers in Denmark. We fish up and down the rivers while Thomas tells us about fishing techniques and the holding spots that we come across. The film is about fishing spoons, spinners and wobblers — and how to fish them most effectively. We see a lot of dramatic and hectic fights with beautiful seatrout — and we are there when Thomas catches a strong salmon. It is a film filled with great tips and facts, intense fights and beautiful scenery along the rivers.
