Gunnison Deep
www.rigzone.com Located in deepwater Gulf of Mexico, the Gunnison oil and gas field spans Garden Banks Blocks 667, 668 and 669. Designed as a production hub for area fields, the Gunnison field development also produces the Durango and Deep Dawson discoveries. Anadarko serves as the operator of Gunnison with 50% interest 3150 feet (960 meters) of water. Loaded down with 8 fishermen, 7 cases of beer and way too many deep sea rods and reels, we made the 4 hour trip to Gunnison. The seas were 2 feet or less up to 50 miles our and then dropped to less than 1 foot. These action photos show how flat the ocean was, and our cruising speed was between 35 and 40 kts. Looking for yellowfin, we settled for plenty of large blackfin at the rig. Deep drops done on the way home at Little Sister rig, harvested a large warsaw grouper. The trip took 28 hours from dock to dock, and the group pic showed the hollowed eyed fisherman for one last pose. Great trip!

New Species of the Deep
The most comprehensive survey ever undertaken of the world’s oceans has uncovered around 6000 potential new species. The first ever Census of Marine Life, which has taken a decade to complete, estimates the number of known species to increased from 230000 to nearly 250000. As pictured here is a new species of hydromedusae, common at depths below 1000 metres, which was found by a remotely operated vehicle in the seas around the Arctic.
