Canyon Runner 48 – August 5-6 – 46 Yellowfin (31 Chunked) All 40-65 Pounds

Capts. Mark DeBlasio and Dean Lambros had the Mike Davies charter out to the Hudson Canyon area on Friday to Saturday and immediately got into fish as soon as they found the life. Trolling the flats they picked away at 12 yellowfin from 40-60 pounds almost all of which were picked on either Canyon Runner Spreader Bars or Ballyhoo. They set up for the night bite right where they had them on the troll and had fish under the boat quickly. The action built steadily all night with more and more fish coming into the slick that eventually they stopped chunking and just had out baited hooks. Throughout the night they brought 31 fish to the boat after about 40+ bites. Many of the fish were caught on jigs as well of course on bait. Up on the troll in the morning they were looking for a big-eye bite with big lures and big bars being pulled but all they did was catch more yellowfin. They finished up with 46 yellowfin (more than half released) and every one of these fish were 40 – 65 pounds.

I hate to this in the fear that I might jinx it but maybe, just maybe, we are looking at a traditional chunking season like we use to have. That is, the night action seems to be steadily building as it should – with more than just one boat catching each night is catching. You see, another boat in the area had 10 nice fish and a few others picked away at a few fish. This is actually a better sign than if just my caught 100.

As for us – we’ll be back at it Monday. We have a couple spots on open boat trips on the 48 Viking with Capt. Mark DeBlasio on August 15-16 & 16-17. Cost is $ 725/person.

Squid Bar or Squid Chain from the teaser reels?

Whats the preference, from the teaser reels off the outriggers, squid bar? or squid chain?

My past experience is always good with my squid chain as a teaser, but I also see guys running to spreader bar teasers off the outriggers, while marlin fishing…

Whats the general consensus, is one better then the other?

My common sense says the bar would garner more looks simply for the realism and the size, but I have also had many a bill fish attack my squid chain teasers.

What are ya’ll running, and I am speaking of strictly bill fishing in the southern mid-Atlantic, sails and whites. I already run a dredge too.

Pretty Work, Mahi and Yellowtail still snapping in The Keys

The keys carry on to generate nicely for us on the &quotPretty Function&quot Some genuine great Mahi all around as effectively as great reef fishing.

Capt. Andrew Reports:

Stopped on the bait patch 1st factor on the way out, the cigar minnows ended up tremendous thick. Moved about to yet another spot on the reef for yellowtails in 42 feet of drinking water and they bit extremely effectively the charter caught 20 or so wonderful ones.

We determined a shot at dolphin were in the cards so we ran out 16 miles to about 750 feet of water exactly where we heard on the VHF they were biting, Shortly we located a few small colleges of fish and caught a few, ran into one huge school of nice huge schoolies and caught a bunch. They would only try to eat the reside baits and were extremely finicky about that. So if your heading out make sure you deliver a lot of livies. Was tremendous hot at that position so we headed house with a stop in shallow for some swimming.
