Capt Joe Shutes Bait and Tackle report, Atlantic Beach 3-13

03-13-2011: Capt. Joe’s now has a new page on the web-site. "Capt’s comments and Events". The offshore fishing this past weekend has really started to pick up some. The winds were not as bad as they have been and larger boats in the charter fleet did prertty good offshore. There were catches of yellowfin tuna, wahoo , blackfin tuna and dolphin caugth both Saturday and Sunday. All we need is a little bit more cooperation with the winds and things will really start to pick up. With the waters back in the sound and the beaches starting to warm up some, the red drum bite is starting to pick up. Even though you can’t keep any speckled trout right now, the speckled trout bite back in some of the creeks and deep water areas are picking up as well. # 17 MirrOlures in the electric chicken color have been producing some nice 2 to 3 lb specks. .The North Carolina Marine Fisheries commission has made a new ruling of Speckled Trout. The recreational closure for speckled trout will stay in effect until June 15th, while allowing a 50 lb by-catch in the commercial fisheries or 10% of total catch up to 50 lbs. Trawling for stripers will continue until the remainder of the quota is caught up this season.
