Vava’u Sport Fishing Club
Tonga Fish Tales Newsletter – February 2011

February …. Most of the Pacific seasoned unsettled weather and Tonga was no exception. Apart from a handful of days of powerful winds we had rain and nevertheless a lot more rain and very persistent northerly swells. In amongst the climate patterns we had a handful of great days fishing and by the stop of the month a welcome climate modify and a run of fish.
Billfish Motion ……… These that got out fishing noted it was tough heading and the bite was slow. The blues had been there but the strikes ended up lazy and half hearted. No large fish had been caught with the regular all around 80kg. The bait concentrations started out developing once more and by month conclude there have been huge educational institutions of skipjack and school dimensions yellow fin together with masses of flying fish. March really should see significantly enhanced billfishing.
Yellow Fin Motion …… The odd great fish was noted in the 70kg plus array – a pity the weather was poor as February usually delivers excellent runs of large fish, especially west of the FAD regions.
Wahoo Motion ………… A number of excellent fish noted in the 20kg range but generally it was slow heading and challenging to fish the reef areas because of to the large Northerly swells.
Mahimahi Motion …….. Not considerably much better than very last month but started to boost late in the month. A return to the SE weather patterns started to bring in sensible figures of fish in and the Center Region held some very good bulls in the 20kg range.
GT &amp Puppy Tooth Motion ………. Tough heading in the internal Eastern Reef places because of to the major swell activity. On a few of the far better days heading out to two offshore Islands produced a great deal of action and quite a few bust offs – some good GT’s and Dogtooth reported.
