2011 striped bass season has started!
Captain Matt Williams of Miss Judy Charters and Taylor Kern holding up his nice striped bass, which was caught Sunday, November 6, 201. According to the story this fish jumped out of the water while trying to throw the hook. However, Taylors ability to keep the slack out of the line proved more effective than the desires of the jumping fish.
Savannah River Areas!
While fishing in the Savannah River areas this past week our customers got to enjoy a steady striped bass bite. While using live shrimp as bait under small adjustable floats the action was strong. For those that want to do this type of fishing now is the time to make plans. For those fishermen planning on using their own boats, please make sure you check out the current Georgia and South Carolina State fishing regulations for striped and hybrid bass
To cork or not!!
This is a smaller version of the traditional adjustable float. The up side is it is not a heavy as the larger corks. The down side is it hard to see this float when its a little rough or when it get way down current.
Lets talk about how to fish inshore in the wind!!
Since it seems like this is all we have had lately is high winds. Its time to know what to do when this is a given. Windy conditions offer inshore fishermen quite challenge. The reason being is not all of your places can usually be fished due to the high wind direction. Not only that, but most of the time windy conditions can muddy the water in certain areas causing fish to move elsewhere. It can be brutal especially if there is a chill in the air and the water temperature is low to mid sixties. So I think you will all agree winds do offer the inshore fishermen quite a catching challenge. So here are a few things to combat a given windy conditions.
I didnt mention in the above paragraph about how hard it is to cast against or sideways of the wind. Its almost impossible to get this job done and still have a bait hooked up when the float lands. So here is a suggestion that could help you on your next windy fish day: I suggest anchoring up current and let you adjust able floats, float with the current until you can barely see them. Of course, if you get a hit it would be best to set the hook. Drift fishing allows you to cover a lot of water while also being able to find exactly where the fish are holding. Popping corks dont work as well in regards to this application, because you need to be able to adjust your depth quick.
This in called the keeping the rod pointed in the direction of the cork situation. The secret when just letting the current take your float is that you will have more control of any bagging in the line. If you point the rod at the float as it makes way in the current your chances are better when getting a hit for hooking up.
Say what you want, but the traditional adjustable old time float does a great job of getting your bait to the fish. This set up works quite well in windy condition. And as you know I havent met a fisherman yet that doesnt like to see the sinking of the cork!
Red fish Time!
For those fishermen wanting to target just red fish now is the time. These fish are bulking up while getting ready for winter time conditions. They still have a lot of different types of baits to feed on. With that being said, Most flukes type baits rigged weed less being pulled through the grass will definitely get a red fishs attention! Tight lines!
This is a nice spotted sea trout bite!
The trout bite has been very steady with fisherman getting a lot of chances to catch these fish. The formula for catching and keeping has been going like this. You normally catch about 3 undersize before catching a keeper. Yes the best bait is live shrimp. However, you might find if you change up to artificial or basically start out with it, it really isnt going to make a difference in the hooking up department!
A red fishs tail!
The old red fish is probably one of the most interesting fish to target. You can catch them in deep or shallow water. You can catch them by sight casting or you can sit still and wait for them to come to you. They offer up a great fight and in most cases can be released without any problems. Its the kind of fish that we can catch over and over it just keeps kicking oops Im sorry, I mean just keeps swimming!!!
Artificial Reefs
Sheepshead fishing at the artificial reefs
When the water temperature drops below 65 degrees inshore sheepshead make their offshore move. The near shore artificial reefs are holding so nice numbers of sheepshead. Its best to anchor directly on the wreck. Once situated I suggest fishing the top, the sides, and stern areas until you find the fish. We have been catching sheepshead, black drum, flounder, and red fish. Its picture taking opportunity for sure!

Mrs. Wilma Brown
Every time I think about Mrs. Wilma Brown, also known as Mrs. Wilma, I get a smile on my face. She was probably one of the strongest women that I have ever met. She raised two children all alone and did a great job of doing it. She had a daughter and a son. Her daughter is my long time friend as well as my first mate on the Miss Judy Too, Captain Kathy Brown. Mrs. Brown also had a son named Mike. Mrs. Wilma lived in Statesboro and was known far and wide by those that lived and worked in the area. From the politicians to the police department to the drug dealers that they chased Mrs. Wilma knew them all and they knew her.
When I first met Mrs. Wilma, I will never forget that wonderful smile on her face. You couldnt help, but instantly liking her. For many years our families got together on holidays and all sort of functions. I felt like and considered Mrs. Wilma part of my extended family. She had lots of qualities such as no job was too hard and she was one of the best cooks I have ever seen. When you visited Mrs. Wilmas table she always cooked a special dish for each of her guest. My favorite was creamed silver queen corn. Believe me when I say, I could make an entire meal on just eating her creamed corn!
Every time I passed through Statesboro, I always tried to stop by and say hello! On this particular night around 10:00 PM I was headed to Augusta to see some friends. As soon as I made the turn near Mrs. Wilmas street so as to get to the west side of Statesboro my car had a serious mechanical malfunction. Apparently the power steering hose felt the need to bust, which was a very bad thing. However, with all bad comes some sort of good especially in this case. Now heres the thing if my hose hadnt busted I would have never got to experience such a wonderful ordeal!! Believe me I am still talking about this adventure today!!
So here I am, its around 10:00 PM and my car is broken down. As soon as that thought ran through my head Mrs. Wilmas name popped into my mind. The best news was that her house was less than a half of mile away. So, I cranked up my car and fought with steering it until I reached Mrs. Wilmas drive way. As I made the turn up into her front yard I could see lights on and her small new blue car in the driveway. Before I could get out the car Mrs. Wilma met me at the porch with a big smile and wave.
After a big hug was received I started telling Mr. Wilma what had happened to my car. By this time it was around 11:00 PM and I knew no local car rental shops would be open. As we talked Mrs. Wilma offered to lend me her car so that I could get where I was going, which was very nice of her. However, I needed somewhat of a more permanent transportation fix and I didnt want her to be without a car for even one night.
As we talked Mrs. Wilma said, You know I just might know someone that can help us. It was getting close to midnight, but that didnt seem to make a difference to Mrs. Wilma Brown! With that being said we headed out the door and began a most unbelievable adventure. As soon as we got down the steps Mrs. Wilma handed me the key and said, You drive and I will tell you where to go! So I cranked up, backed up, and started taking driving directions. I am not sure what main road we turned off of. However, I am sure that from this point we were on a very dark dirt road for many miles. About 5 miles into the dirt road ride, Mrs. Wilma said, Now slow down a bit and let me get my bearings! I slowed a bit and watched as she pointed, recanted, pointed, recanted, and then said; This isnt the turn. So I picked up speed to about 20 miles per hour riding over yet another dirt road mile. Its my opinion that a dirt road mile and a paved road mile even though the measurements are the same are two different animals. Dirt roads have plenty of bumps and holes. As we rode bumpy bump it reminded me somewhat of riding waves on the ocean.
As we rode Mrs. Wilma talked about how long it had been since she had been in this neck of the woods. I had my bright lights on so that I might see anything that might be in my path. So far so good! All at once Mrs. Wilma said, Turn left right after you pass that clump of pine trees. Sure enough there was a dirt road to the left, which after the turn looked just like the one we just turned off of. This road was lined with trees and shrubs on both sides. Two automobiles could pass, but it would be a little close encounter, for sure. When we got to the end of the road there was a large house with all the lights on. We got out, walked up to the house, and the door opened and out came Red. Walking towards us with open arms he hugged Mrs. Wilma and said, Its good to see you!
The man meeting us in the yard was of medium build, nice looking, clean cut, and his hair was red. Hence the name Red was the name that I gave him. I was introduced, but cant remember his name to this day. So the conversation began like this. Mrs. Wilma said, Judys car broke down and she needs to rent one until she can get hers fixed. Red replied, There are plenty of cars outside with the keys in them and you can take your pick! While all this conversing was going on between Mrs. Wilma and Red my eyes started wondering about. It was then that I noticed there was no furniture in this house and the phone with rotary dial was basically sitting on the floor. The room that we were standing in looked to have been a busy place at one time. There were scrapes and scratches on the floor as if there was some sort of heavy furniture present at one time. There also were lots of double electrical boxes and numerous empty phone jacks.
As if I had been somewhere else I finally zoned myself back into the conversation. Red said, Judy you can take your pick of automobiles out there. Heres a flashlight so that you can decide. I asked, How much do I need to pay you and when? Red said, The car rental is $ 25.00 per day with unlimited mileage. This sounded like a deal to me. Then Red said, When you get ready to return the car take it to the mechanic shop next to Mrs. Wilmas house. And if you want your car fixed I am sure these guys will be glad to help you. The fact of the matter is Mrs. Wilma can call them tomorrow and they can pick up your car and repair it. When you return the rental then you can pick up your car. This is the last time you will talk to me at least for 5 years. I am reporting to prison in the morning. I had to ask even though I didnt want to it just popped out of my mouth. What the heck for? Red said, Drug trafficking and gambling charges.
As soon as this came out of his mouth I knew I was standing in the place and also just about to rent a car that had been at one time or another possibly involved in Reds operation. In my mind I had to say, Now how cool is that?
Red then said, When you want to return the car you can either pay Mrs. Wilma or the mechanic shop next to her. According to Red this place was inadvertently his business, but only in say so only! The ownership read something other than Red so and so! Mrs. Wilma gave Red a big hug and then he hugged me too.
As I cranked up my newly acquire rental and Mrs. Wilma did so in her new blue car I really started wondering how these two knew each other. As I fell in behind her making way down the bumpy bump dirt road I tried recapping what had just happened. I was now driving a car, which I never signed for. Not only that I didnt even know if it had any insurance what so ever. So with that though I concurred that my current automobile policy may or may not cover an automobile that may or may not belong to a drug dealer or not!
By the time we got back to Mrs. Wilmas house it was around 2:00 AM. After thanking her for everything she smiled and said, Leave me your keys and I will have you car fixed in the morning. I handed her the keys and hugged her good bye thanking here once again. By 2:30 AM I was back on the road headed to Augusta, Georgia arriving somewhere around 4:00 AM.
I stayed in Augusta for a few days touching base with Mrs. Wilma about my car. My plans were to drop off my rental and pick up my car on the way home. Well, as luck would have it the mechanic had to order some parts for my car. So therefore instead of stopping to pick up my car I drove straight through Statesboro making way to Savannah.
After about three days, Mrs. Wilma called to say, My car was ready!
With all this being said, I prepared to head for Statesboro to return my rental and pick up my car. Once arriving at Mrs. Wilmas she instructed me to go across the street to return the rental and pick up my car. Once I got into the office I explained who I was and that I was here to return the rental and pick up my car. No one seemed to know about the rental and there was certainly no charge. The only charge was for repairs done to my automobile. I tried on several occasions to ask about the rental. However, everything I said fell on deaf ears. So I then asked, What do I do with the car that I just drove up in? They all replied, Park it in the parking lot and leave the keys in it.
As soon as I picked up my car up I be-lined it over to Mrs. Wilmas house so that I could tell her about the rental. Once inside I said, They wouldnt let me pay anything for the rental! And Mrs. Wilma said, What rental? And she smiled that smile that could mean so many things!!! And I guess you could say we left it just like that!!!!
