Port of Port Orford Oregon – Recreational and Commercial Fishing for over a Century

Port Orford recently completed a modern open water dock with a solid paved dock surface. Until a couple of years ago, what we had was a high maintenance, wooden dock. The new dock has brought changes, but the fishermen of Port Orford still have no bar to cross on their way to their fishing grounds and their boats still have special hardware built into them so they can be lifted by a huge crane – into and out of the ocean. When the fishing boats are on shore, they are parked in rows, cradled in custom-made trailers that are easily pulled around the dock by pickup trucks. In addition, there is a seasonal Summer/Fall ‘floating dock’ for sports boats. When lowered into position, there is stairway access from the main dock down to the floating dock platform. The dock and stairway are on hinges and are lifted up and secured during the Winter/Spring storm seasons. Cabizon, dungeness crab, black cod, ling cod, rock fish, salmon, sea urchin are just some of the seasonal-regulated catches you might see being landed. Divers find easy access to our nearby coves. The Port offers spectacular ocean views year round and Winter storm watching when waves smash against the jetty. The boats return to unload their catch in the late afternoon. Each of the two fish buyers has their own small hoist and they allow the public to watch as they unload the boats using plastic or metal bins, and in the case of urchins – rope mesh baskets. You will be impressed with the quality of the fish being
